How can i remedy a functional leg length descrepancy

Hello,

I feel I have acquired a functional LLD on my right leg which was acquired by running countless miles on cambered roads and always running on the left side of the road (facing traffic). This LLD has seriously limited my running and after 15-20 mins of running, my right foot severely overpronates more than my left and I almost have to drag my right leg along because it just goes limp.

This has been going on since june and if this problem doesn't go away soon, I will probably quit running and pursue cycling

i am thinking about chiropractory but I have gone before and it hasn't really helped.I wore a heel lift yesterday in my right shoe and it felt terrible and gave me knee pain

I am at my wits end w/ this issue and I am open to any suggestions.

stay off the cambered roads - period. (obviously - you know that )

try a little bit of jogging barefoot on grass, strides, etc. ( very slow /easy buildup )

hit the trails if you can - go to a shorter choppy stride, w/ greater cadence.

i have had the same thing - see "loss of coordination in leg" thread - foomiler has good ideas.

i did change from heel striker to midfoot - that helped too. It took awhile to re-wire the nervous system ( and sore calf muscles ), but i think that kept my leg from going dead.

good luck - sorry to hear about your malady. I ran cambered roads too in HS - what a disaster. I would have been better running laps around the football practice fields.

No need to quit running.

The functional LLD is caused by an imbalance in your hips. Heel-lifts are BS and that will not solve the underlying problem.

You need to realign your hips so that the legs can become even again. As for now the right foot overpronates to compensate the LLD.

So what can you do about it?

Build your core strength to eliminate any muscle imbalances contributing to the LLD.

Do planks in every direction and hold for 15-20 seconds, repeat 3 times. I feel that the side lying plank is the most important for this condition since it works the transversus abdominis best, which is a key stabilizer.

Also stretching is important, especially on the short side since a tight psoas and quadratus lumborum can contribute to the LLD. (Normally in LLD you will supinate on the short leg and pronate on the long leg)

There is a device called the 'backchamp' (www.backchamp.com) that is made to realign the hips. You really don't have to buy it to perform the exercise, you just need a belt and something to put between your knees that you can press on. Make sure to perform it twice a day.

IMO chiropractory is a waste of money and effort. These type of corrections they make will not be permanent because there are still WEAK and TIGHT muscles that will rule your body. This is perfect news for the chiroguy since you will be a paying customer for the rest of your life...unless you decides to do something about it.
