They're right next to each other, but they look radically different.

legend has it that king solomon spread his seed around and the rest is history..
They don't all look like the runners that represent their respective nations. But, tribal differences over thousands of years can do that sort of thing.
Why do Spanish and French people look different?
Most famous Ethiopian runners: Oromo
Most famous Kenyan runners: Kalenjin
I'm no expert, but having studied the conflicts in Sudan a little recently, I can say that it probably has something to do with traditional tribal roots. Ethiopia is probably more Arab-based whereas Kenya is clearly more "African"-based.
Totally distinct cultural histories.
Human skin color has the same significance as the color of a car, which is none. Eths and Kens are a separate stock of people who have a different shade of skin color as well. Kens tend to be darker toned.
My understanding is that DNA taken in each country shows a different backgroud with respect to the males of each - and the Ethiopians show a strong Jewish or Arab background.
It is a fact that the most genetically diverse people on earth live in Kenya and Ethiopia near the Rift Valley. The farther you get from this region the less and less genetically diverse the people become. So the least diverse people are Asians, Native Americans and Pacific islanders.
Which is why we should all do this:

Might turn out to be gimicky, but seems kinda neato on the surface.
I have always thought that the Ethiopians aren't fully black. They look as mixed as biracial people in America.
Kind of like Mexicans and Americans.
Ethiopians are considered white.
Is this why Asians all look so similar to each other?

Why do Italians and Germans look so different from each other?

Italy is probably more Arab-based. Germany is clearly more "European"-based.

PS.
You do realise variations in white people's hair and eye colour can be as baffling to unexposed Africans just as the spectrum of skin tones in black people seems confusing to most white people (why? I don't know), do you?
There's only one race now. Scientists proved that. The old theory of red, black, white, yellow, brown races are just myths and fairy tales long dismissed by reseachers. Everyone comes from the Rift Valley, Kenya, appx 60,000 years ago. See:

Also I was surpised when I learned on my 1st training trip to Ethiopia that the names of people used in Western Asia were used in Ethiopia before our ancestors were allowed by the Kings to have names and surnames. Our names all originate from Egypt, the cataracts down the Nile, including Ethiopia.
some have significant features ..narrow nose.. and bigger hollow eyes.. if you live in the Washington DC area you will start noticing people that are ethiopian they are easy to distinguish.. some somalians also look ethiopian. but eritreans are identical.. and are hard to distinguish.

On the contrary, Lucy said 'Y'all are Africans'

there are DOZENS of ethnic groups in Ethiopia.

As there are in Kenya. And within these tribes, you'll get dark and light skinned people sometimes even within the same family.
Also, northern Kenya is generally populated by the Borana who are essentially the same people (physically, culturally and linguistically) as the Oromo from which many famous Ethiopian runners come. However, there still hasn't been a world class runner from that tribe on the Kenyan side of the border.

Many people forget how diverse Ethiopia is. Here's a 100% Ethiopian who many didn't think she was Ethiopian (and thought she was Kenyan/Ugandan competing for Ethiopia). She may look more like Kenyan or Ugandan, but she is Ethiopian, (from Gambella region in Ethiopia); People of Gambella are dark skinned like this athlete (Ethiopian Long Jumper - Nibolo Uguda ).
