master's training for mile - RT article...
I have similar questions. I'm 38 and been seriously running for about a year; only started doing races last November, so nearly a year there too. My first race was a 5K XC in snow and ice: 29:45ish; today I ran a greenway 5K at 23:24 which has been my fastest yet. Next weekend I'm running a mile race just to see - on the greenway my best timed mile was 7:07. I just recently got a pair of flats that I've run in twice and tried out for a race for the first time today. I'm hoping to get right at 7 or just under next weekend for the mile. If it helps any, my husband makes me get out on the track once in a while to run 400s; that has definitely helped me. My longer goal is to be able to do more 400s in a row until I can run an 800 at a fast pace that doesn't destroy me.
I'd say, not very hard. it's mostly a function of strength, volume of training, and consistency (a long period of training at fairly high volumes). On a 1 to 10 scale, I'd put the difficulty at 4 or 5.
Breaking 7 for a mile is an amazing accomplishment for a woman over age 40, that very few are able to do, especially with no running background.
As you are both close already and doing the right things, I feel you both will be able to do this.
Thanks for the replies
Good luck HHJ sure you can do it you look to be quite close to it
Its something about the 7 minute miling don't know what it is
Personally, I think a 7 minute mile is awesome for a 40 yo women. But if you want something more objective than my opinion, plug the data into a WAVA age graded calculator. The answer comes out to 63.111. Above 60% is considered to be competitive in "local" races.
Some other "comparable" age graded times are:
40 yo male running the mile in 6:14.5
40 yo male running a marathon in 3:24:20, which doesn't get you into Boston.
40 yo female running a marathon in 3:45:45, which does get you into Boston.

Hey E...
As I look at your times, it seems you are already running at fairly high level in relation to your speed. A 1:39 400, then your mile equivalent being 1:52. That's pretty close. It seems you base and strength are already there. I would sugggest speed drills, and lots of 200s and 400s in you interval training to bring your speed back.
I'm jealous! I still have good speed at 42 but don't have the wind/endurance you have. Good luck. :•)

Depends SO much on the woman. Breaking 7 is certainly uncommon for women over 40 but I wouldn't say it's super hard. Sounds contradictory, I guess, but I hope you know what I mean. You can do it and since few women can, it's certainly something to be proud of.
Thanks OR
Yes i have done a lot of base work in the past (injured in Feb but only lost about a month)Have started interval/tempo work in the last 6 weeks Certainly will concentrate on more 200s and 400s
MP Wava aw yes do look at that from time to time am at 60%+ for 5km-5 mile not run a good 10km in a few years lacking really anything shorter or longer
Breaking 7 is an "amazing" accomplishment for a woman over 40?? Not at all, unless we're talking about someone who has been living on the couch for a few decades.
At 43, just broke 7 for a mile messing around on the track in a pair of Frees two weeks ago. My training has consisted of little more than jogging around with my kid all summer.
OP, your goal sounds very reasonable if you continue serious training. Glad to see so many over-40 women with determination to improve speed. Good luck!

This is why I say not amazing but rare. So that, in itself, makes it noteworthy.
It's an admirable goal, but I don't think it's all that rare. A woman over 40 who can run a 3:30 marathon (and there are quite a few of us out there) will likely be running sub-7:00 at least in speed workouts (mile repeats) if not also in tempo runs.
Maybe we split the difference and say it's "atypical." :)
Cheers guys
This makes me more determined now to really focus on this and go for it There are certainly women out there (and older) who have done it just got to do the work to get it
Not hard. I would compare it with running a sub 4 marathon. With a reasonable amount of training, most people can do it.
I'm 42 and my goal is to run a 6mn mile.
Well the womens masters world record in the marathon is 2:25:43 which is 26 consecutive miles averaging 5:33 a mile. Don't make 7 minutes out to be some Mt. Everest. When your goal is to break 6 minutes post your concerns up here.
Made it! Friday night - 6:45 mile!
Competitive local runner sounds pretty accurate to me.

Congratulations woo hoo!!
You're only 38 though hehe.
Do it again when you're 40. :)
I would say sub 7 is possible for a 40yo. One clue is that the womens 70-75 masters mile record = 6:48.
