All Rocky did was mow down a few trees and run through a bit of snow, whereas the Russian dude was doing all this mad training shit. Where did it all go wrong?

He proved that old school training can beat the new stuff if you have bigger balls than the other guy.
Rocky's head is made of cement. Tough to knock him out, even with 3,000 devastating blows to the cranium.
HGH.
Question for you: who'd win - the guy running on the treadmill and indoor track or the guy running outside?
I like the part in Rocky III where Clubber Lang (played by Mr. T) says:
"I want Balboa. I'm gonna crucify him. Real bad!"
[Like you could just slightly or moderately crucify someone.]

Yes, you can slightly or moderately crucify someone. Apparently people used to crucify by pounding the giant nail through the bone, so the pain will last longer, and it becomes a long and slow death.
The best part was when Balboa gave his moving speech after the fight, and even the stiff and grumpy KGB guys stood up and applauded, and everyone left the theatre with the wonderful feeling that with guys like Rocky in the world, mankind would surely come to its senses before ever engaging in a nuclear war.

More like where did it all go right?!
Rocky worked just as hard, if not harder during his training sessions. He also had the eye of the tiger, and the stubborn willpower of a steaming hippo
Rocky also had the motivation of the death of his friend and mentor. It was all psychological. Once the Russian saw how nails Rocky was he became intimidated. And once Rocky cut the Russian he saw that he could be beat.
The lesson? If we can get Bekele to kill AlSal, Ritz will beat him.
Maybe the heart attack was enough?
Well the guy did end the cold war with that film

Well, if the race were indoors ...

tell that to Ritz and his altitude tent -alter g -asthma med fueled 12:56. Ritz is the new Drago, while Brian Sell training in michigan is Rocky, ie, in real life Drago pounds Rocky into oblivion.
The answer to your question is easy: Rocky was banging Brigitte Nielson during the filming of that movie! Instead of giving him the clap, she gave him super powers.
Remember, Brigette was hot back in those days, before she was banging Mark Gastineau, Falco, and Flava Flav, and then got old and weather. Still great ta-tas.
Because it was in the script that way. Duh!
Greatest movie soundtrack ever is Rocky IV!
Training Montage
No Easy Way Out
Burning Hearts
Hearts on Fire
etc.
Heck I'm listening to it right now.
Rocky cut Drago above his eye in the first round. That was key. Rocky also had some serious determination as he was avenging the death of Apollo.
Rocky IV had the best training montage. In fact, it was so good it had to be broken up into two parts! Stallone's and the Lundgren's physique when they walked out into the ring was insane! I've never seen any boxer look anything like that. Gotta admire the work they must have put in, even if it was enhanced.
