Is it ok to take ibuprofen and celebrex at teh same time?

Avoid taking Celebrex together with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), diflunisal (Dolobid), etodolac (Lodine), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis), ketorolac (Toradol), mefenamic acid (Ponstel), meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen), or piroxicam (Feldene).

Yeah, but we all know they put all that stuff on there as a simple precaution. I'm a risk taker. I'm not going to sprout another arm or something.

They are both blood thinners, they both upset liver and stomach. Celebrex 200 is pretty heavy stuff. you do the math!

neither celebrex nor ibuprofen are blood thinners.

Celebrex is an NSAID, it is not ibuprofen but it is in the same class of drugs. While it probably won't kill you to take Celebrex and Motrin, it probably would be better to just take one or the other. And Celebrex is pretty strong so...

Also, I don't think NSAIDs are blood thinners, but they can cause ulcers and upset stomach and stuff in large quanitities. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you take a semi-normal amount (as in don't eat the entire bottle one morning).

NSAIDs as a class reduce inflammation by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme. Unfortunately, they also inhibit the related COX-1 enzyme, which is why they cause ulcers when taken for a long period. Celebrex and other later generation NSAIDs are more selective for COX-2 vs. COX-1, but still do inhibit COX-1, just less effectively than older NSAIDs. If you take both simultaneously then this is similar to taking more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen and you will give yourself a peptic ulcer if you do this for very long. Given that both drugs reduce inflammation by inhibiting COX-2, you might not even see much additional benefit from taking both if the Celebrex dose alone is already inhibiting most of the COX-2. If you really need something more effective for the short term, like an upcoming race, then it makes much more sense to ask a doctor for a hydrocortisone injection.

Nor do they "upset the liver".

Bottom line, not going to kill you if you do it once or twice, but not great do be doing long term. Both work by a very similar mechanism and will have additive/synergistic side effects - The most problematic being gastrointestinal bleeding and acute renal failure.
