My son, who is beginning his freshman year of high school, has been practicing with the cross-country team for the last week and a half. My wife and I are becoming increasingly concerned about the strange behavior of the cross-country coach.
First, the coach is a big advocate of backwards running. And I don't mean running a couple of strides backwards after the main workout. The coach is having the team run miles of timed 400-meter repetitions completely backwards. During one practice last week, my son fell twice, badly scraping his shoulder on one of the falls. According to my son, the coach responded to the fall by saying that "pain is the best teacher."
On Monday of this week, I left work early and watched the last half-hour of practice. The coach reminded of a younger version (he's about 40) of George Costanza's dad on Seinfeld. He shouted a lot and seemed generally flustered. I briefly talked to the coach about the backwards running. He claimed that "Henry" Zatopek (I think he meant Emil) ran half of his miles backwards while preparing for the 1952 Olympics. I am pretty sure that this isn't true, but I didn't argue.
Tonight, my wife picked my son up from practice, and she listened to a weird speech that the coach gave at the end of practice. The coach apparently railed against the dangers of tropical oils. He claimed that tropical oils caused cancer, gout, obesity, and a bunch of other problems. He told the team that anyone seen eating at a local Thai restaurant would not be able to participate in races for one week. My wife thought that the coach seemed disturbed.
I want to schedule a meeting with the athletic director about the coach's behavior. Does anyone here have experience with complaining about a coach at a public school? This coach is not literally abusing the kids, but his eccentricities are making me more than a little concerned.
