I think it depends on what you mean by "equivalent." if you mean how good the time is, the above answers may be correct. if you think, however, that you can automatically run those times by virtue of running a 1:57.9, that may very well not be true, assuming you are an MD runner. I know plenty of guys who can get well under 2 that can barely break 16 when they step up. (hence "specialty.")
well i can tell you this, when i ran 1:58 in high school, i ran 4:50 for the mile and 17:20 for 5k. this was in colorado so im sure it would have been better at sea level, but then again i was a sprinter.
in college i ran 1:54, 4:16, 9:12, 16:30....so who knows what the correlation is
