Again, for the umpteenth time, I'm running through a neighborhood park and I get rushed by an unleashed dog. And this time (and not the first time) the dog is aggressive enough for me to stop the run and kick the mutt in the side before the owner made it over to restrain it. The owner (a middle aged woman) yells at me that there was no need to do that, that her precious dog was just being friendly and would never hurt anyone, etc... pretty much what every dog owner says until the day their beast attacks some kid. I reminded her, politely in my estimation, that I was going to defend myself if I feel threatened and that she was required to keep her dog leashed in this public park. I then ran off without getting into it any further with her.
Now, I do not dislike dogs. I had one growing up. I do not have one now. But I do dislike stupid, insensitive dog owners who always act shocked, SHOCKED, when their unleashed dog takes off after a runner. They seem to be unable to comprehend the fact that their dog is actually an animal without the capacity for rational thought that will react in completely unpredictable and, at times, violent ways, because that's what animals do in the state of nature. This is why a professional zookeeper can work with a lion for 10 straight years with no problems at all, but one day, for inexplicable reasons, the lion decides to maul them to death.
To all dog owners out there: A dog is an animal! Please keep it leashed!
I feel better now.
