Ha, you're right on running in D-F in winter and especially right on Big G's! Best sandwiches ever and even better breakfast.
To the OP, running in Portland in winter is fine. On windy days you have to avoid waterfront. Snow can be a pain in the ass in the city but running in surrounding towns can be much better on a snowy day. You won't find much for trails in winter unless it's really cold and you can go on snowmobile trails (not in Portland, obviously). Summertime trail running is much better.
It's rare that it's so cold that running is really limited (below 10 for me, or 0 with wind chill). There is an indoor track 30 min outside the city if you like to do winter workouts indoors.
I've lived in Maine most of my life and in many ways prefer winter training to summer. Can't beat fall and spring here though.
