Tell them you think that them getting their PhDs were a huge waste of money and time and that they could have used that money and time for ____________.
I don't actually think this, I just think it would be an awesome pay to piss them off and have some empathy.
High School Kid - some real advice
You say they are great parents but just don't support running. OK, this is a weakness of theirs. Parents have all sorts of weaknesses some small some big. Obviously they have some block to the sport and are very rigid in their belief that this sport is a waste of time and does you no good. Yes they are wrong and very pigheaded but that doesn't mean they don't love you or that you can't love them.
You will not change their belief. You already know that. Try to communicate and find common ground. Let them know that you know how they feel and that you will try not to let running interfere with other things. Let them know why its important to you.
Think this question through. What realistically can you see your parents doing to support running that they are not doing now? Knowing who they are and their limitations what is reasonable?
The key is to communicate through the barriers that have been erected between you and your parents on this topic. Your anger at them for what they are not giving you might make you unwilling to try.
