U. Bolt and most sprinters wear "cyclist" type of shorts in competition. Distance runners wear a traditional running shorts.
At what distance does it make sense to go with the clingy, longer type of racing shorts?

hm.. I would just say it's all about personal taste.
I run 5000&up outdoors and 300/5000 indoors and I do all my training in lycra/spandex.
I only wear splits in races, and that only because sometimes I actually like to "fit in" with the rest of my team and wear the same uniform.
Seems like personal taste mostly. I watched Chris Solinsky win the NCAA 5K in long tight shorts in 2006 and then traditional running shorts in 2007. Both times were by a big margin.
I think people racing in spandex looks (and feels, having tried it) stupid as hell in the 1500 and higher, but below that it's okay.
Do what is comfortable. I wear the lycra shorts for all distances because they feel good.
I like the lycra shorts (Sprinter type) for all distances- just a lot more comfortable.
