Both have shattered their 2 respective events WR's. I'd say Bekele has shattered them by even a larger margin, but the media as a whole really just gives no love to him.
My vote goes to Bekele.

Call me when Bekele shatters a WR during a major competition that involves running rounds. When he runs 12:25 for a 5K at the Olys or WC, give me a shout.
It's simple... Bekele hands down. Bolt was born a freak, of course Bekele has been blessed with amazing talent as well but the amount of work that goes into developing that is still far more demanding than anything Bolt could even imagine.
Who is more impressive? If you are talking about the '09 WC's it has to be Bolt. Smashing 2 WRs is beyond impressive. KB's performances were amazing, but Bolt's were once in a life time (except he did it last year).
I wouldn't say Bekele shattered those records.
Most impressive?
No contest.
Just imagine you’re the promoter of one of the big athletic meetings in Europe.
Now just who do you imagine he’d prefer run at his promotion to ensure a maximum capacity crowd?
The sums I hear being bandied about for Bolt competing at a single meet are more than Bekele could earn all year.
In fact, Bolt could probably get a greater appearance fee for just appearing, never mind competing, than Bekele could for running.
Unfair to distance runners maybe - but it’s a fact of life right now in Europe where the money is - and later, the same in the Far East.
the stats
Bekele Bolt
WC gold 5 3
OC gold 3 3
Indoor WC gold 1 0
world XC gold 10 0
idv world records 4 3
It clear Bekele is way more impressive he has dominated totally 3 different sports. And any one who has ever run a 10K knows that 26:17 is not a human time.

My vote also goes to Bekele.
In this age of instant gratification, 9 secs as opposed to 26:00 min. and change - (or 12:00 and change)of course, Bolt would garner more interest.
Here's why Bekele's feat is more impressive:
1)The amount of time and endurance to train.
2)The number of competitors in a given race and time.
3)The race/pace tactics and contemplation, timing
4)The distance run in a limited number of days 20K (10K, 5K (heat),5K (race) as opposed to 600M (2x100 + 2x200)in 7 days period.
Hands down, Bekele.
to have "good enough conditions" for running a wr in 100m, you only need to have those conditions for less than 10 SECONDS
to have "good enough conditions" for running a wr in 5000m, you need to have those conditions for less than 13 MINUTES
these are always hard questions because it involves figuring out a way to mix apples with oranges.
sprinting is also an event which you can compete at top level MULTIPLE TIMES a day
long distance running is an event in which one NEVER runs multiple times a day because it's not REASONABLE if the competitors are to have enough rest to be at the top of their game
So in conclusion, particularly to the above poster dissing Bekele because he didn't shatter WR's at a major championship, you're a fool. get real.
bekele = the best
Bekele FTW

total distance of bolt's racing at wc/olympics: 1.2km (at most)
total distance of bekele's rounds at wc/olympics: 20km
sooooo...bolt's more impressive because he runs rounds? yea, that makes sense
Do women prefer a man with some stamina or a 9 seconder? lol

Counting XC??? Hahaha, this must be letsrun. Nobody gives a fu\ck about XC.
Bekele,
Most letsrunners would woop Bolt's ass in a 5K .....
Agree there. On the other hand Bolt is fast!
So on a distance runners site - Bekele gets the nod.
Surprise, Surprise.
My dictionary describes ‘impressive’ as making a deep impression.
More Germans tuned in to watch Bolt run his 100mts than watched the final of the football world cup.
That’s like in America, if Bolt was running in New York for instance - more Americans would watch his performance than would watch the SuperBowl
And I’ve no doubt Bolt got similar viewing figures all over Europe, everywhere in fact, other than America.
As he isn’t American, interest there would obviously be low-key.
Bolt is no longer just another world-record holding athlete - he’s now the world’s most recognisable, sporting superstar - surpassing all others.
Counting total championships/wr's is silly for two reasons:
Bekele's career is much longer to this point.
You're including a sport that not both of them do (XC).
further, counting indoor is stupid because neither of them emphasize it and Bolt doesn't do it at all.
Now, the marks in track for the past two years are similar. I'd give Bolt's WR's more because they're further from the rest of his competitors. Look at them %-wise and you'll see what I mean. Simply put, Geb is much closer to Bekele than Gay is to Bolt.
For the guy who said 26:17 is out of this world, didn't Geb run 26:22? That's 0.2 seconds per lap faster ...
I love Bekele, he's amazing, but let's be real. Bolt is every bit as good.
Also, to the guy who was comparing the number of races, I think Bolt ran 4 100's, 3 200's and 1 4x100. Counting total meters is dumb, by that standard, only the marathon winner could be considered the best.
