The 400m would be way more exciting to watch if they had a one turn stagger and then had to fight for position the rest of the way. It would probably become the most exciting event to watch in track.
Anyone agree?

Sorry, no.
Just make it a waterfall start. And give them boxing or MMA gloves while you're at it.
I can of like the idea too. It will never happen though.
If this was ever to happen, it would be two turns. That way the final 100 meters would be epic.
Effectively, that is what happens indoors. It's usually a two turn stagger because it's a 200m track, but on the front straight they break in and the 2nd lap is all about racing!

I have thought about this many times and it absolutely would be the most exciting.
Good initiative but the idea is just bad. The great thing about the 400 is the fact that you run exactly 1 lap on the track there is no more perfect long sprinting forum. Plus you would almost certainly lose some time in that sort of race. If you like that kind of race watch some indoor track meets.
Some events that would be more exciting:
- the 4x100m with no lane assignments
- the javelin catch
- what if the long jump was like the high jump? That is, the pit would actually be a deep pit (maybe water filled?) that got longer as the event progressed.
- pole vaulting for distance
I'm just sayin'*

That's how it started.

As it is, they run in white gloves and not so much as a brush. Booorrrrrrinngggggggggggg.
The three turn stagger on the 4x4. Boooorrringggg.
Holy crap, you're right. I had no idea.

Well, it did happen until the late sixties at some high school championship meets. This was when 220 yards were run on the straightaway. The first 220 yards of the 440 was on the straight, then everyone would break for the turn just like in a distance race and run down the opposite straightaway to the finish line which was on the other (far) side of the track.
Oops, I misread the post, thinking you wanted a one turn race. Sorry....
when I ran college track we 440 with one turn and didnt use lanes after you passed the cut in . We also ran 220 yd on a straight away which was cool unless you had the wind against you. Times were slower with a cinder track but I THINK [ this was over 50 YEARS AGO] it was easier on the legs . The first time I ran on a rubber track it felt like a road race and I hated it.
They just needs to make 800m tracks and bigger stadiums.
