Zapruder/1500 analysis- 3 pieces of evidence Burka struck 1st- watch legs, hips, arms 8/23/2009 8:31PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm trying to find where the first contact happened. From the 3 camera angles I can find, it looks like Burka had the first contact.

Feet from the rear: Watch the feet from 32-35 seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DIaob7a8Ik
From this angle it looks like Burka is already way off balance before any feet or legs make contact between the two.

From the rear: Watch the hips from 32-35 seconds as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DIaob7a8Ik
Again- it doesn't look like the hips are involved in the collision until after Burka is way off balance. From this angle, it is pretty clear to me that Burka's balance is thrown from something occurring above the waist.

Arms: Watch Burka's left arm starting around 52 seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DIaob7a8Ik
She makes 1, 2 normal arm pumps with her strides, then the third, just as Rodriguez is adjacent, looks like she throws an intentional elbow, then goes off balance.

Now look at the Day 9 highlights at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DIaob7a8Ik
Here, it looks like Rodriguez has the hip clearance (about 52 sec in), but Burka goes wide with that left elbow, smacks Rodriguez, and this leads to Burka going down.

From this, I'm pretty convinced that Rodriguez didn't push through- but rather Burka threw a wide elbow, upon impact, this threw off her stride, and she wiped out. Rodriguez only goes off the track to avoid the falling runner- something likely not DQ-worthy.

Very tricky call- I'm not sure they got it right.

Watch the second high-light carefully. If you look off by the bushes, near the fence you will see a puff of smoke. I think there is another, yet to be identified, runner that is partly responsible for the fall.

Rodriguez's reaction was good enough for me to accept her DQ. She basically knew she messed up and admitted it, post-race, after the DQ.

Look at 0:52 into the day 9 highlights. Best angle I've found so far. From there it looks more incidental than anything, just what happens when 3 runners try to fit into 1 lane.

I'll simplify this for you.
Burka leading/running wide in Lane 1 to prevent passing on the outside. Rodriguez sees opportunity to slip through on the GAP given her. Too late Burka sees Rodriguez shadow and tries to block that move by moving back to the rail...so they collide.

Burka has no one to blame but herself...if she (Burka) had stayed on the rail this wouldn't have occured.

I think the head of the Spanish fed agreed with the DQ. That seems pretty damning to me.

Burka was ahead and in lane one.

If you pass on the inside, 99% of the time it is your fault if there is a collision. The inside of lane one belongs to the leader.

Regardless of whether there was ever a window opening up, Burka (being in the lead) had the pole position. Rodriguez tried to slip through a small window where she thought she could fit, but Burka already had that position.

It's like getting on the highway -- the people already in the lane have priority over the people merging. Saying "There was a small opening there before they moved back over" doesn't make it the other persons' fault.

agreed. In addition, as pointed out by others, Rodriguez coming back to Burka is damning as well. The overwhelming evidence is the video from the front that shows Burka staying in the middle of the lane - not swinging inside as others are saying - and having the first point of contact being her left arm in a normal swing motion being hit by Rodriguez. She looses balance immediately and all contact after that point from Burka is because she is attempting to catch her balance before falling.

Put it to rest, those that understand the sport agree in the call - it wasn't even a tough call.

On the road, the operator of the vehicle that rear-ends someone is at fault. Makes no difference when the rear-ended vehicle spins around and hits the offender head on.

Burka was rear-ended.

Rodriguez initiates contact with Burka's legs when she first tries to squeeze through on the inside. At that point, it was clear that Rodriguez did not have room to pass on the inside. But, after the first contact, Rodriguez clearly decides to just ram her way through. Her right shoulder drops as she again makes contact with Burka's left arm just as Burka is trying to recover from the initial contact. It is the second contact that merits the DQ. It is one thing to have incidental contact with a runners legs, it is another to follow up that contact by dropping a shoulder to push a runner aside.

Or, to put it another way, if Rodriguez's move was legal, the race would not be about who is the fastest, but who can shove or take a shove.

If all the analysis shows Rodriguez fouled Burka, why didn't they DQ her for the shove? Why'd they DQ her for taking the step off the track? Seems as if the officials took the easy way out. If I were Rodriguez I'd bitch and say "If you're not DQing me for the push, then re-instate me because I had to step off the track to avoid the problems and gained no advantage from it."

She wasn't DQ'd for stepping of the track, she was DQ's for the contact.

F*** EPOpia.

Burka didn't get a medal

In the photo finish Rodriquez will ALWAYS be ahead.

There is definately an advantage to passing on the inside vs. passing on the outside. Add to that stepping off the track. They took the easy route with the DQ but there were options.
Initiating contact from behind and stepping off the track to get around the leader.
The full speed replays are better than the slow mo replays in this case.
You get a better idea of force and momentum.

The Spaniard at least deserves an *A* for agility- watch how she nimbly avoids that tripod on the infield. Steeple?

It really hit home after she draped the flag over her shoulder and was going to go for a lap of honour. Her teammate (placed 4th after the DQ) yells at her (probably along the lines of "what were you doing?!") and Rodruigez starts to cry - I think it hit home right then that she would be DQ'd. She then went over to Burka to apologize.
Certainly Burka opened a window for Rodruigez, but it was too small of one to go through (as she found out) without impeding the front runner. Jamal was also crowding Burka from the outside at the same time. Too bad for both athletes (Burka and Rodruigez), but the latter certainly had to pay for the foul. She should have been a bit more patient and allowed things to open up later - but that's easy to say in hindsight.

Fully agree.
It is very uncommon to pass on the inside except in the last 100M for the very reasons you stated. She made a big gamble in a very physical race and paid the obvious consequences. Burka had no where to go since someone was trying to pass her on the outside too.
As someone else pointed out, in slow motion you see things that aren't necessarily factors, elbows moving etc. In normal speed you see the forces real forces in action and it is quite telling and damning...

I totally agree with the two previous posters on her initial reaction was something that caught me off guard. Who wins a World title and doesn't at least lift their arms in victory after crossing the line and shout out loud or at least smile? I saw Rodriguez doing none of this whatsoever. Immediately I thought back to Burka falling and said to myself, she's DQ'd.
