it's simply a cue.
One of the hardest things to do in a long jump is to get off the board and vertical. All of that horizontal speed can't be maintained horizontally to jump far, nor could it all be converted to the vertical.
Basically, in order to go up, you've got to put something in the other direction. Whether you would like to admit it or not.
Some jumpers get off the board just fine, and they need to be told to run off the board, some don't put enough into the vertical and the cue that works for them is to smash it...
I don't know for a fact, but there is probably a small difference in force between the two jumpers, but it's still important.
