I thought for sure that after the Athens Olympic 5000, Bekele learned his lesson when it comes to racing against top milers and would avoid races that would be decided by a kick in the last 400. He certainly had a different strategy in Beijing and destroyed everyone by picking up the pace over time.
I was completely shocked that he kept the Berlin pace as slow as he did. Why do you think he was willing to take such a gamble? Was it that he had such confidence in his kick? He didn't respect Lagat? It obviously worked out in his favor, but the race wouldn't have been nearly as close if he followed the same strategy that he did in Beijing.
Also, some were questioning his fitness about a month ago as he was returning from injury, but judging from his performance in the 10000 it appears that he is in near WR shape again.
