I didn't say it early enough. But the obvious reason why Britan pushed for a US DQ for a girlie-man reason was because they knew it was the only way they had a chance at a medal.
I think the rule should be that if they step to the outside of the lane and do not impede, no foul. if the step to the inside of the lane but do cross into the adjacent lane then they can take their place but the time does not count for record purposes. Only one step on the line should be permitted to the inside. At least it would allow for small errors due to accelerating on the turn or having to glance for the baton. The current rules allow for Pu$$y politics and a buch of whiners like the British team.
The US guys did screw up. It didn't really affect the race, but they did break a rule and that's the way it goes.
On the other hand, if say the Cuban team or some other select third world team had done the same, they'd probably have gotten a pass.
The US did screw up. The Brits did complain in order to improve their chances for a medal. But that's the way the Brits are. In business dealings with the British, I've found them to be close to Israelis and Chinese for misrepresentation and bald faced lying. It's the cultures.
In the end though, the US guys blew it. The Brits got their medal against a mostly weak field. No one will remember in two years except the Brits. Only the Jamaicans were getting true attention.
