So, yeah...this is not so running related, but as I sit watching the women's 5,000 meter final on universalsports.com (thank God for them), here's something that I've been wondering about.
I thought, mmm...who are the greatest/best bands (not solo artists) in rock and roll/pop? And I started mentally listing them...in no particular order (biased to include personal favorites):
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Guns and Roses
Metallica
The Who
The Kinks
Aerosmith
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Black Sabbath
U2
AC/DC
The Moody Blues (not so much a personal favorite)
...and I realized, "huh, they're mostly Brit/UK bands....
"Woah...GREAT finish in the women's 5k there! Man!...the Kenyan girls have gone fantastic in the 5 and the 10!"
Ah...so, this did turn out to have a bit of running content.
So, anyway...easy to see how many of the all-time great bands are from the UK. Who are the rest of the U.S. bands that stack up?
The Beach Boys? (not for me), Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band? (again, not for me). The Doors? The Ramones? KISS (uh, I don't think so). Bon Jovi? (ditto). Van Halen? Motley Crue? Not a fan of either. Journey? Pearl Jam? Nirvana?
Ironically, most of those great UK bands clearly and admittedly were heavily influenced by American roots and blues music, and of course, Dylan. What to make of this?
Oh...and WTF happened to the U.S. in the women's 4x100 qualifier. I just heard. First the men, and then the women. Every year. Sheesh!
