I think Merga will win. The guy is a beast and he's having a great year. Kebede will provide fierce opposition.

Thank you for being considerate enough to post am or pm.
Nat Jenkins will not win.
Seems that many of the best runners are missing (Geb, Kibet, Kwambai,Wanjiru...) Watch out for Ghraib and Abel Kirui!!
Merga has had one good marathon, Boston. His others have all been the same pattern of starting too fast and fading. Kebede has a far superior record including fast finishes and a PB over a minute faster. If it come down to a head-to-head finish Kebede has better chances. Kebede 1st, Merga 2nd unless he really blows up.
3rd place is a tougher call:
Cheruiyot: terrible performance in only hot-weather marathon to date, Chicago '07. DNS in Beijing, DNF in Boston this year. Talking big. Doesn't look likely to hang with the young blood.
Kirui: Hot and cold. A couple of very fast races of course, but some very slow ones and at least one DNF. 50-50 chance of being in there.
Goumri: Terrible record in summer championships: DNF in Osaka '07, 2:15:00 in Beijing. Vulnerable in NYC and London. Not likely.
Dos Santos: Best bet. The second half of NYC last year showed he's at least a 2:06 guy waiting to happen with a deadly 2nd half. He didn't run a spring marathon, which means he is rested, and he ran sub-28 for 10k in June. Probably 3rd place finisher.
Sato: Darkhorse. A disaster in Beijing, but you can't count a 2:07 guy out.
Other Ethiopians and Kenyans: not enough data to say they are reliable threats. Decent to good PBs one and all, but most have little experience.
Other Moroccans and Japanese: Kisri dropped a good one this spring but otherwise has not been A-class. Maeda could be Japan's secret weapon. Other guys from both countries likewise B-class.
Summary:
Gold - Kebede
Silver - Merga
Bronze - Dos Santos
If Merga pushes it too hard Dos Santos will take silver.
I think Emmanuel Mutai will make the podium today...

what do you all think of a course to be reapeated 4 times?
Race underway
(....just too depressing no Italian marathoners....)
40 african runners up front
Nate Jenkins went down and chasing the pack.
Loop course becoming the standard for championships it seems... good if you are there watching.
Is anyone getting any video?
Nothing on channelsurfing.net

Nate Jenkins already off the back. And the announcers making fun of his spandex tight shorts.
Who's the american at the back of the lead pack?
Dan Browne in the yellow shoes.
