Completely fresh legs for guys who ran a little recklessly bunched up in the first 250 meters. If I was a guy like Symmonds, who ran smart and out of trouble the first portion of the race, I'd be a little pissed. Now I am racing guys in a final who have only run 800m previously, where I have run a mile at 1:45 pace or whatever.

It's the *World Championship* Semi's, things happen. Luck is a part of it, as is simple positioning tactics. Those guys shouldn't be in.

I could see if it was moving them through to a semi, but not a final. Lots of good guys weren't going to make the final, these DNF'ers should be in the category as well.

I agree. getting to be way too much incentive to "fall" in these rounds and semi's in 800 and 1500.

Seems like eventually we'll see entire heats result in a series of tumbles, after 200-300m, all runners advancing.

A good compromise policy might be to advance runners only who are reasonable distance of qualifying position, or say that all runners challenging to advance on this basis will be considered after all heats are run. Here, evidence that Som would have advanced in zero.

I am going to go out on a limb and say no one at this level has EVER fallen on purpose to advance.

TEN men in the 800 final? Sounds like another fall is just waiting to happen. Kaki should have jogged in his semi-final, then he would be in this race too.

maybe not fallen on purpose, but knowing that you will be advanced after falling tempts the faller to take a dive. You have three choices, get up quickly and run as hard as possible, get up slowly and jog it in, or roll around on the ground like you were shot.

Given Som's advancement after DNF-ing and that the soccer diving strategy conserves the most energy for the final, that should be the preferred strategy after falling. Do we really want that?

For all we know Kaki and his federation didn't file a protest/objection/whatever the f*** you need to submit to get in. So we should wait to bash until we know everything. But it does look like some bullshit.

did you guys watch the race?? kaki caused the fall. why the hell would he be able to get through? rowbury got through because of something like this.

One thing someone might be able to do is have a teammate sacrifice themselves for you, take you out, you file a protest, then have you automatically get in.

Watch the video, the RSA and Polish runner got up immediately, and tried to get back in the race, and worse case for both, they finished. Kaki just sat there like a baby, similar to his last fall. Ever here of Lasse Viren ? I know the 800m is a lot different than the 5K or 10K, but Kaki is supposed to be one of the best 800m runners at present, so have some guts and get up!!!

Looks good on him - he is not in the final because he does not have the guts to suck it up and make the extra effort or attempt to keep going under tough circumstances.

For this, he will never be a World Champion !

If you have read the IAAF rules, you'd know that falling does not mean an automatic free pass. You'd have to not only file an appeal but be able to convince the referee that it was not your fault and you deserve to be advanced.

Given the umpires stationed around the track and the availability of video replay, you'd have to be a damn good actor and damn lucky to make it look like you weren't at all faking.

Kaki is the new wilson kipketer, what happened to him today is similar to what happened to EL G in the 1996 olympics, from now on, he dominate the next 4-6 years and break the world record.
