St. Louis 1908?
Maybe LA 1984 (although I doubt it).

Don't include the 10000 and marathon, those are by default. 800, 1500, 5000 would have been sweet to get 3.
We still have a chance to grab a medal in the 800, 1500, and 5000.
That would be pretty impressive. I think Lagat will nab another medal in the 5K (looked like he might've won the 1500 aside from getting boxed), but KD or Symmonds getting an 800 medal is a stretch. We'll see.
Just to think of the awesome feat that the US marathoners made it through their heats. Do you think they took it easy in the rounds to have recovered sufficiently?
On the women's side, it hasn't been out of the ordinary. But on the men's side...
800 - TBA
1500 - 4th, 8th, 12th (best 3-deep showing since '68)
Steeple - nada
5k - TBA, 3 finalists
10k - 6th, 8th (first-ever WC/OG with 2 in the top 8)
Marathon - TBA
The 10k is a high-water mark for us, the 1500 is the best in 41 years, and the 5k isn't looking too bad either--we've had 2 in the top 8 at a WC/OG just three times since WWI: 1932, 1964, 2007.
Our guys were just trying hard enough to qualify in the shot and discus and save it for the final too.

The 10,000 is not always by default. Heats have been used in the past. In 1972 for example Shorter made it to the final but Galloway and Jon Anderson both missed the final.

Galloway would have made the final, but his 8 minute cycle of running ended 30 meters from the finish line, and he got passed just before he walked across the line.
