Lower abdomen pain but NOT a hernia 8/9/2009 8:43AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I have this pain in my lower abdomen, above the pelvic area and 2-3 inches below the bellybutton.

The pain occurs ONLY when i stand up or lie down.
It doesnt hurt if you apply pressure to it.

It sometimes hurts when i run but only a little bit, not real pain. But its chronic and its nagging.

I've been to 2 GPs, a urologist, and a surgeon who have all said its not a hernia and they think it is just tenderness in my muscles and that i should take it easy from running.

Anyone else with a similar situation? Should i take 2 weeks full rest? Should i do abs exercises? Help?

My guess would be that it's just a strained muscle that hasn't been able to heal because you've continued to train. I'd take it easy for a few days and see if it starts to feel better. Maybe use a heating pad a few times a day as well (this will make it feel a lot better if it is a muscle strain).

Thanks. Hopefully, it is indeed just a strain. I will take full rest for a week and see. I've had this nagging pain for 2-3 months now.

I also had a separate problem involving blood in the urine (for 3 days and then it stopped). But all my doctors say it is unrelated and that i should get a cystoscopy to rule out bladder cancer. My god, when it rains it pours!

Somehow i am convinced that it is all related to running hard in the heat and humidity without proper hydration. But no doctor seems to agree with me....

I have a very similar pain. It hurts after getting up from bed or after sitting for a long time. Sometimes it seems to spiral up towards my belly button and then alongside my abs. It feels as though it is deeper then the "6-pack" muscles.

It doesn't hurt that badly while running unless i do strides or pick up the pace. even then it seems to "warm up" and not be too bad. Suggestions? should i take a couple of days off?

Yeah that's whats weird and frustating. It only hurts when when getting up from bed and less when lying down. My pain is localized to the center spot 2-3 inches below belly buttom. It doesn't really hurt when running but i do feel something non-neutral there. I sometimes hold my left side when i run because it feels funny. I have no idea whats wrong. The doctors ruled out a hernia. It could very well just be a strained muscle but i don't know how to get rid of it. I'm planning on taking this entire week off outright and take it from there!
Inguinal hernia?
RE: Lower abdomen pain but NOT a hernia 8/9/2009 10:57AM - in reply to oldxcdude Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I've had a very similar experience. After several months of treatment for muscle "strains," I was told that it was an inguinal hernia - not a full blown hole in the wall, but a damaged and weakened area. I was told - by two separate docs - that I needed a surgery to have a patch sewn over the damaged area. I did not go under the knife, because I was told that the likelihood of prolonged pain and inactivity "at my age" was great. The first two docs I went to never mentioned this type of hernia. They just ran through the cough test and declared that it could not be a hernia. Good luck.

So you didn't go under the knife - so what did you do? Can you run?? I'm in my mid-40s and not very excited about surgery.

I have had similar lower ab pain (also tightness in the groin and hip flexors) for well over several years. My pain was also accompanied by frequent urination at times. Initially, my dr. diagnosed me with prostatitis, but 4 weeks of antibiotics did nothing. Running was very painful because the jarring caused pain each step. I ended up having multiple tests on my protate including a cat scan---but everything comes up totally normal. Through my own research I learned that a huge percentage of chronic protatitis is non-bacterial and often called chronic pelvic pain syndrome or CPPS. There is growing evidence that trigger point therapy is a useful treatment as the condition is caused by tension in the muscles in your butt area. I have never taken any type of alternative medicine or supplements but I kept reading about a supplement called prosta-q that had some medical evidence to support its effectiveness against CPPS. I started taking it about 2 months ago and my condition has improved about 50% and I am able to run with very little pain.
Perhaps it is just a pulled mucsle you have, but you may want to google "chronic pelvic pain syndrome", "CPPS", "Stanford protocal", and "prosta-q" to learn more. Good luck.

Also take a look at sports hernia. A zillion threads on letsrun. Use the search functions. Symptoms are not quite what you are describing, but a lot of hard speed work can be the trigger because of the stress hard accelerations put on the lower abs. I had lower ab pain that got so bad I couldn't run. Cough test said hernia. Surgeon did the cough test (weeks after the GP did one) and couldn't feel the hernia. CT scan showed nothing. A few weeks rest and I was back running. I still can strain the area if I am not careful about not straining when starting fast interval reps.

You have my friend what is called athletic pubalgia. I had it for years and finally had an expert Richard Cattey in Milwaukee diagnose it. Will not be a bulge or turn up in any x-ray or MRI.

I thought I had that, but then I was told I didn't. My groin and hip pain are almost nonexistent after starting active release therapy. sometimes they just feel a little weak (so i am starting to strengthen them), but there is not pain.

I don't think i have what is described as sports hernia.

My discomfort has subsided now that i have taken a few days off of running. Perhaps that is all i needed.

A previous poster mentioned that speedwork could be the trouble. I looked back at my log and the trouble seems to have started at the time i began doing 10x100 sessions twice a week at mile pace.

It may be your psoas(sp?) muscle which is a deep hip flexor. I have had similar pain and had Active release on my psoas and hips flexors and it has helped. It huts like hell to have it done since it is deep, but it really helps.

Do you have to go to someone for ART or are there some things you can learn on your own to do it yourself?

I had pain in my lower abdomen long before I was diagnosed as a hernia. Keep in mind that doctors diagnose a hernia by feeling a portion of your intestine push through the muscle. I believe (admittedly I'm not a doctor) that the muscle damage can occur long befor the intestine pushes through.

I diagnosed myself when I noticed a bump in my lower abdomen. Strange thing was that once the bump showed up, I did not have pain anymore. I went a couple years and the bump gradually got larger. I finally went under the knife (traditional patch surgery) this past February and am almost as good as new.

My advice is to keep monitoring it yourself, and have your doc check you for a hernia at your annual visit.
Sounds familiar

I've been having this problem almost EXACTLY as you describe on and off for the last couple years. It hurts in the area you describe, doing the things that you describe (It sometimes is really painful to cough or sneeze). I can feel it when I run, although it seems to go away after the first 1/2 mile or so. It usually is tender the day after a race or track workout.

I thought it may be a hernia as well, but that was ruled out by the physician.

I have taken weeks off only to have it return. I have tried to strengthen the core muscles and yet it still returns. I am resigned to the fact that "it" will probably always be there unless I quit running altogether.

Leg lifts seem to hurt as well, although I can still do them.

Anyone have an answer?

I noticed that I had pain at the crease of my where my leg meets my stomached aka the penis line. It is right where the groin meets the lower ab? I took a couple days off and my ab pain went away but now i have this pain. any ideas?

i had something similar that i called pain in the "v" area. if you go from your hips down to your pubic bone, this is where it hurt. i felt it when i would go from lying to sitting or standing and it would get really painful and stiff on longer runs.

i read the hernia thread and started doing alot of the exercises that were posted in a link. it took about 4 weeks of doing these but and i'm pain free now and stoked that i can run more than 1 hr without feeling the 'v'.

The key thing was to do no exericse that caused stress to that area. one article said something like "there is no *kind of* pain" it either causes pain or it doesn't and if it hurts, don't do the exercise".

check out that thread and look at the links to exericses.
