That sucks, my heart goes out to her family.
If she wasn't wearing an ipod, she could very likely still be alive.

I doubt it.
This is a horrible story. Freak accidents do happen.
Some lady in my neck of the woods was canoeing down a river and a tree hit her and she died.
Goddamn trees.
I run there all the time. its common for branches or trees to be down. never seen one fall tho. usually the danger in the park are assholes who think their dogs dont need to be on a leash.
The Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbot, was paralyzed from the waist down when he got hit by a falling branch running around Rice Univ. in Houston.
This is why I stopped running with music a long time ago. You gotta be aware of your surroundings and also, it toughens you up mentally and makes it harder to fall asleep at the wheel and not push.
A few years ago, in Westchester County in the NYC suburbs, one of the best masters runners in NYRR history was killed by a falling tree.
goddamn ipods.
if she had run any faster, she would have been past that point when the branch fell. hence: don't jog!
I run here every day... very very very sad!
"Breaking news"
I lived in Summit Park apartments for a few years back in the 80s...we called (Forbidden Drive) the Bridle Path...ran there twice daily. Could have happened to anyone.
My sympathies to her family.
Very, very sad. And given howmany people run with music in their ears - IPODS per se are not the problem - it could have happened to anybody.
However, running with "impaired" hearing is not a great idea. Trees, traffic, anything, anybody could interfere. When you run you need to be aware of what is going on around you, above, under you. This isolatin oneself is very MTV, very cool, but not a great idea IMMO. Especially when you are alone and don't have other people around you who might be able to hear something you don't, like in a race, and warn you with a nudge or something.
I just ran by the site of the accident..
tree branch was massive.. it absolutely destroyed the wooden fence next to the trail and everything around it..
We should cut down all trees to make the world a safer place.
One time I was sitting next to my campfire in the woods. I heard a big crack up above me. I stood up and ran. This huge branch landed right where I was sitting. It would have killed me had I not moved. I'm guessing that if she didn't have her ipod in her ears, she might have been able to hear the branch break or hear it knocking other branches in time to react as well. I'm not advocating people never run with ipods as this was a freak accident, but you are slightly safer without them no doubt.
"A passer-by called 911 but did not stay until police arrived."
What the hell?
