Having grown up w/ a couple of the riders in the peleton - the following is the general feeling of most riders in this years tour -
Armstrong played the consummate teammate to AC in this race - as was evident in his staying on Wiggy's wheel up Le Grand Bornand... He has now won 7 TDF and played the most supportive role of a domestique in an 8th - and placed 3rd (!) a the age of 37.
Truly a great accomplishment for a very team-oriented man (a man who very often allowed his domestiques to ride ahead for him and take stages that they worked for him when he was the GC rider)
Contador ???
Unfortunately, where Lance prevails in understanding the peleton and the politics and team-play NECESSARY to running a successful team - Alberto Contador fails miserably. His treatment of Andreas Kloeden on Le Grand Bornand made this perfectly evident. Lance would never have done such a thing despite his out-sized ego. The entire world (except the Spanish) recognized this which is why Armstrong was cheered and hailed by the French media (who once hated him) as Alberto, the Maillot Jaune, was jeered (!). His former domestiques wouldn't be willing to ride through walls for him if he wasnt the consummate professional team player (ask Yuroslav, Chechu, Hincapie, Heras, Levi, Horner - the list goes on and on).
I'm glad Armstrong played such a strong support role to Alberto - the world has a new underdog-hero in LANCE and an opportunistic villian in ALBERTO.
The greatest cyclist in the world - Axel Mercx - agreed yesterday - Lance was right, Alberto wrong...
One thing is certain - next year the world will be watching - and I can assure you Lance will be in top form and have a squad assembled that will be a far cry from this year's tour.
Early prediction for 2010 TDF (a close one):
1)Armstrong +0:00 2) Contador +0:47
Cheers
