I was thinking about utilizing my knowledge in nutrition and exercise to help people get fit, lose weight, get faster, etc by offering training plans at a cost.
My only question is would I need some type of license to do this? If so, what kind of license(s)?

Can anyone counter this? Otherwise, I will hopefully be lawfully selling training plans to locals at my gym and around town. Just want to make sure I'm not going to be taken to court for illegally selling something. I know I'm going to have to include a disclaimer though, saying if they get hurt or don't get the results they wanted it's their own damn fault.

A program you get off the internet doesn't take into consideration your history, your diet, your work schedule, and many other factors that need to be considered before writing a schedule for an athlete.

What you're talking about is personal training and no there are no state sactioned or required liscenses like with physical therapy for example.
So as a personal trainer you are basically a salesman. Why should I buy from you when you have no certification or degree that shows you know what the heck you are talking about. Now, you might be the best trainer in the world, you might be very knowledgeable but people won't buy from you if you have no credentials.
What kind of training programs are you selling? Running? Weight lifting? Nutrition? You realize most of your clients will not be top line runners? Most will be 18-20 minute 5k guys in their 30s and 40s.
For distance running....get a USATF Level 1. That's pretty easy to get.
For weightlifting/nutrition you've got: ACSM-HFS, ACSM-PT, NSCA-CSCS, NSCA-PT, NASM, NASM-CES, NASM-PES, ISSA, ACE, and so on and so forth. I'd suggest ASCM-HFS or NSCA-CSCS BUT you need a health related degrees. 2nd tier option would be the NASM certs as you have a few options there and they were developed by a former NSCA guy.
Verdict: Spend $300 for the fitness cert. Spend another $125 for the USATF cert. Just because you are fast or in good shape doesn't mean people will listen to you or buy your product.

I disagree.
You can get all the degrees in the world, but you still have to prove your ability as a coach by coahing someone to success.
Just because you have a certificate on your wall doesn't make you a good coach. Its the application of the knowledge that counts, and you don't have to gain the knowledge from a text book.
I'd rather get coached by someone who has proven they can coach people to success, versus, someone that can read lots of books and pass tests.
Obviously if you have both, its fine, but dont get hung up on it.

As of now, there are just a few people I've talked to about my running and they have asked me to write up a training plan for them. I thought they were joking at first, but then they told me they were serious and they'd even pay me. That's what got my brain clicking. I wanted to make sure if I started marketing it that I wouldn't be doing anything wrong (since that is the case in some professions, like doctors, lawyers, plumbers, etc.).
So I know I don't need any credentials for the few I've talked to since they have already signed on. I was thinking along the lines that I'd do it for a few people, get good results, and use their testimonies, but I see how a certification would definitely help as well.
Also, I know I wouldn't be coaching elites or anything. My target audience (at first, anyway) would be people looking to lose weight or people just getting into road races. Anyway, thanks again.
