I am in the age group and I have a part time job, thats it. My other form of employment laid me off last month and its hard finding new employment. I was wondering if this is common right now in our economy or what?

I work at my university, and they can only afford to keep me on part time.
I work part time for minimum wage doing manual labor.
hear what?
Son you'll never be hired. I don't know about "hear" but I know you won't here.
I'm 16 I went on an interview with a nice resume and got a job part-time. Maybe because I didn't misspell my own name on the resume.
--"hear"
can't find crap, and i live on "the gold coast"
DUH!
...and it is just starting.
A 55ish buddy went from a 375k a year IT consultant to Merril Lynch to a 225k employee of same to save his job.
Snotnose kids and old farts are basically unemployable in their chosen careerpaths . Oldfarts sometimes can save their jobs by taking a big cut but if your position is redundant aint nuttin to drop to.
...and it is just starting.
Those folks that printed those Imyself and Me Consultant Co. cards are becoming more line D at the state unemployment office types than SanTropez tanned entrepreneurs.
...and it is just starting.
What I have found is that its easy to find something that pays you half of what you need to live on...
but finding something that pays more is almost impossible. I don't want odd jobs, constantly changing shifts, with no benefits. But the M-F 9-5 jobs with dental are all taken by lardo 35-50 y/o's with no hope of advancement. As a 24 year old, getting ready to turn 25 with school bills what I want is a decent steady job.
So far this month I have savings, but in a couple of months that will be gone and I'll be going further into debt just to pay rent. At this point I'm curtailing my running habit as shoes are too expensive, shopping at Sam's Club for bulk food, and literally saving every penny. Even with all of this at this rate its not going to buy me much time unless I drastically change my lifestyle, give up my car, and change apartments. As a 24 year old, giving those things up aren't making the decision any easier.
No job for me. 23.
I really don't like the constant corrections of spelling on LetsRun.
BUT! I'm not surprised you got laid off. hear? Seriously?
I would hate to think if you had anything like that on you're resume. (See how dumb I look when I type that?)
23 and Full time here (working at a running store too woohoo!). Fortunately, the owners are very aggressive promoters and marketers of our business, so we're actually growing and may be hiring on a few others later in the summer. I got this job after getting terminated as a lab tech at a mid-size international industrial company.
So as for now I'm doing nothing with the degree I graduated with, but I'm making plenty enough to live on and have a little bit saved up from my previous job (making $20/hour as a single male in a low-rent city was unbelievably awesome).
I work twice a week, plenty of interviews and no call backs. One place I interviewed at for a simple 5 week job of writing down Material Safety Data Sheets in excel. Seems easy, I thought. The interview went well, I was obviously competent to do the job, etc. I call back a week later and they're still interviewing people. It's the same everywhere: way too many applicants for too few positions.

Yes, 23y/o, no work, my contract ended in April. It's been over a month of searching for me in a big city. I'm not being overly picky, I just need something a notch above flipping burgers or breaking concrete. Nothing out there.
23 here unemployed. Got laid off earlier in the year had a temporary job for a few months that ended and havent had an interview in forever.
Heres to hoping swine flu kills off my competition.
24. Not working. Lost a crappy office job in April that I had been at for three months. I'm just climbing and hiking. I will be teaching in Europe in September. When I get back, I think I want to be a cop or a firefighter/paramedic.
I'm sort of convinced that young women have an easier time getting entry-level office jobs (or high school education level jobs) than young men. Or maybe (probably) they just have their shit together more than I do.
23, have a job working for the government. I just got a degree, but I can't find a "real" job. Im happy to have something, but I only make about $12 an hour doing something that is completely unrelated to my degree.
23 and in grad school for engineering. The pay sucks (25k for 50-60 hour work weeks) but at least I have flexible hours and am pretty independent. Plus I like my job most of the time.
18 and no job. Time to cut some grass.
