It is your list so do as you will but I do not think those who run 93% of a mile should get the honor of being called a sub Four Minute Miler. The Four Minute Mile is unique, so unique that the IAAF recognizes the mile as a standalone WR and the only non-metrical WR.

agree 100% a 1500 and a mile are both great but completely different events. To me 3:42 whatever is no 4 min mile, its like me saying I can run a 2:00 800 so I should be included

I hear ya on the 1500/mile shtuff....although your comparison of 2:00 800 is wayyyy off if it will make anybody feel any better about their 2:00 or sub 2:00 800 I never broke 2:00 til sophmore year in college so there is hope...I never really had a good quality shot in a mile after college, and I was a late bloomer as far as quality times go, all my PR's were well after college...and in all honesty my PR's were races where I actually got smoked, like in the 1500 Steve Scott won in like 3:36 3:37 and I was around 10th or 11th.... or my 5000, where I believe 13:30 won and I finished 8th or 9th in 13:46.....
Added the date when Webb ran the first sub-4 in South Carolina. Note: I can confirm the Waigwa mile was in W. Va.
Here's the article I wrote when Webb broke 4 in S.C. for the first time:

Pretty sure Waigwa's time was in Charelston WV a week after NCAA's. Tom Duits of Western Michigan and Steve Lacy of Wisconsin also ran.
You're right, I screwed that up. On my list I have:
West Virginia: 3:58.3, Wilson Waigwa, 6/12/76

This link says that the 1976 SEC Indoor Championships were held at the LSU Field House, so it would count toward Louisiana, not Alabama:

Wheating's best as 3:58? No Fernandez. No Rupp 3:50.9
Ya mean the dates on the headings didn't give it away?

Now, that's silly! They are not "completely" different events in the way that a 800 and mile are different events. Have you ever even raced all three??
The 1500 and mile are quite comparable.
