Very Gutsy race. He hung on when Chelanga surged. Then immediately countered it going balls to the wall.Great race.

I totally agree. He really ran with heart. You could see him gritting his face when passing them with that surge. Props to Forest.
i don't know why everyone was so surprised by this. he has run 27:50 and has shown in the past (last year's 10000m) that he can go out hard and still survive to be there at the end. did you really think rupp and chelanga were going to drop him on his own track?
Let's see, he had an entire year to do nothing but move up from 2nd to 1st, to train to win on his home track.
Rupp finished a sub 14 5k prelim, at around 1AM in the morning, and less than 24 hours later, handed this guy his tail effortlessly.
Maybe he should have been training as hard and smart as Rupp the past year, and really made it a race.
Gutsy run Forrest; die with your boots on kind of stuff!
His last surge was nuts. I kept thinking he was done, then he suddenly the arms went flailing like a madman. I think that was the final straw for Rupp. Still can't believe Forrest stayed so close over the last 600. Impressive run from both of them.

He stayed close \'cause rup was looking back the whole last lap, easing up and shutting it down for the 5k today. Still a great run

Or maybe Rupp is the better athlete. Honestly, I think that Forrest's move managed to drop someone who has a PR 30 seconds faster than his. No doubt about it, Rupp dumped on him in the last 600m, but I doubt Forrest could have trained harder or smarter in the past years - has improved his PR significantly since this time last year.

You could argue if Rupp was in the race he would have been 3rd so he actually did improve. Rupp is an Olympian, that 5k should take nothing out of him. If you don't think that race is impressive you are an idiot.
His last surge was kind of nuts! But it only looked that way because Rupp and Chelanga pratically stopped on that turn where he made the move. Chelanga was tired of leading and did not want to get kicked down by Rupp once again. I honestly think Sammy was going to try to give Rupp a taste a his own medicicne and kick on him but Rupp just had too much gas and he blew it open.. But it was really weird they just looked at each other and stopped for a brief moment. Did anyone else see that?
What I liked most about the Forrest effort was that the race was over for him before it started. Barring something dramatic, he was going to lose to Rupp or Chelanga. Nonetheless, he gave it a go, trying crazy stuff to throw a wrench in the Chelanga/Rupp showdown. One might argue that Forrest is who took Chelanga out of the race, paving the way to an easy victory for Rupp.
One thing I am convinced of is that had Forrest just hung on the back of a Chelanga-Rupp battle is that he would have gotten 3rd.
He was not going to win that race, but he fought like a man. Props to Forrest.
Forrest couldn't have hung on to a Rupp / Chelanga battle because Rupp didn't involve himself in the race period until 1,200 to go.

1st) The other poster said "IF" he had just hung on. The race would have played out differently and Rupp may have led some laps and it may have been a Rupp/Chelanga exchange.
2nd) Forrest DID have a great, gutsy race. I think he was somewhat overlooked coming into this. He ran 7:51 early indoors after a crazy flight out to Washington. He ran 13:30 on boards, though it was overlooked because Rupp & Sam went 13:18 & 13:19. Not many NCAA runners have every gone 13:30 on boards. Those who have are pretty damn great. He then opened outdoors with a 13:30 victory and went well under 28:00 for 10K. All that said, you still had the feeling that he was a distant 3rd coming into this race and he went right with Chelenga on the early fast pace. That was a commitment because once you go there, there is really no backing off. I honestly thought he would get chewed up later and be cherry picked by the rest of the field. Before 5K Forrest was shaking his arms out and looked like he had just finished a hard 20 miler, yet he not only stayed in it he continued to take the lead. And it seemed like a lot of times when he took it over the second half he actually picked up the pace from what Sam was running at. Once I saw that he was going to hang in, I thought Rupp and Sam would probably drop him like a rock when they went, part of this was not really looking at Sam and seeing how tired he had looked from about 5K.
Obviously I was impressed with Rupp, to be able to run a 14:00 5K at 1:30 in the morning and come back 17-18 hours later and warm up and go into a solid paced 10K and run it like he was playing chess and finish like he was setting up for the final moves (to be played today). But Forrest was never going to beat Rupp, and most people thought he wouldn't beat Chelanga. I think his sheer determination and guts made that happen. Had he not gone with Sam off the gun, who knows what would have happened for him. His mind was committed and his body followed. Something tells me he's fried today though!
I seriously wonder what would have happened had Rupp helped in the pace making. Chelanga & Forrest did all the work. Props to Rupp for sitting and kicking for the win. But that won't happen in international competition. All three guys ran well and Forrest reminded me more of Pre - "ran the race to see who had the most guts". Rupp will be a superstar I predict in the near future but I am really more impressed with Forrest!

I was very impressed with Forrest, but I'd be more impressed with Forrest if he can pull off what Rupp is about to. Last night was everything for Forrest, but it was but one piece of Rupp's senior year puzzle. Of course Rupp could have led that thing and won. He could have led it from the start and led the whole way and won. The question is, why would he??? You can't earn team points on a gutty effort.
yeah, tonight will put Rupp up there with the best. I think he might be better than Bob Kennedy was really soon. And you are right about him leading wire to wire. That would have hurt his chances for the win in the 5k. But I believe he would have won the 5k anyways. I guess we will see tonight. It is time the USA (and the posters on this board) starts supporting this great talent.
forest is the ncaa champion. it just so happens a professional sat on him and chelanga for 8800m.
Forest is are ncaa 10k champion!!!!
Rupp's a coward.
Forest has the sheer guts to become a fan favorite. Although, Rupp may still be the better runner... but hey, he's ugly, wimpy, and feminine. Forest is a MAN! THE MAN!!!
My best to Forest!
so many idiots on one board. Rupp is doubling. His team needs every point possible. So why the hell would he "make it a race about guts" or some moronic mouthy ideal you guys are proposing? Did the other two have a 5k heat less than 24 hours earlier? Did they have a 5k final still upcoming?
idiots. Rupp did precisely what a smart, talented, appropriately peaked runner should do in a TEAM championship.
