I now join the haters. What an asshole and idiot. He knew he had a 50 meter lead. Did he have to look over his shoulder 10 times?

Let's see, this is the first time you have ever seen a runner running for team points turn around and check if anyone is gaining on him?
Boy are you inexperienced and immature.
And a liar, you never liked Rupp.
Slowing down so he has more energy for his other races you mean?
he has another race tomorrow. he was checking to see if he had it in the bag or not. do you think he has eyes in the back of his head?
didn't want forrest to go jenny barringer on his ass
No fanboy, he knew he was gonna win. He was looking for over a second. We get it, you're that much better than Forrest. Just cross the damn line and stop embarrassing yourself.
Finally, someone that understands what type of looking is required.
The level of intelligence on this board is just dropping. I said 10 times! He almost ran backwards at one point. Ass.
He was possibly checking on his teammmates progress as well...
It's funny you all like this stuff when Bolt or a Kenyan does it.
You jerks have no idea how hard it is to win any NCAA title is.
Last I checked, looking back is okay.
He didn't moonwalk across the finish line, or show boat in anyway.

Exactly, which is a bitch move. Look, there is nothing you can do to help your teammates at that point. Why not just use his fingers to start counting heads as he rounded the turn. He tries to be cool but fails epically. You don't need to be a rock star, Rupp. Just be your dweeby self.
Look at the splits and you will see that he ran a 3:01 for the last 1200m. :62, :58, :61 ... he wasn't jogging across unless he lost 5 seconds in the last 50 (5:20 pace for last 50 vs. 3:44 ... or 1:20 per 400 vs. 56 per 400 for last 50). He may have slowed but not that dramatically because Forrest was close enough that he could have nabbed him if he really jogged.
Calm down, I bet if he farted on the finish line you guys would accuse him of attempting to poison the rest of the field. Who cares what he does? You weren't in the race.
That was incredible, he ran the last 8 in 2 flat while running backwards for 150m. He was clearly trying to see how close the comp was so he could stay rested for the 5k final. Don't make more of it than it was.
different person, but did you see kiprop (sp.?) in the prefontaine classic celebrate before he even took the lead. It is just apart of it. It is like in the nfl when a player celebrates before getting to the endzone, just apart of the sport.

It's hillarious, kiprop does that and gets celebrated for it. Rupp is 100% in business mode and is spot checking (actually a sign of respect) to make sure nobody comes back on him but at the same time not wanting to run any faster than necessary. Can we please have an age requirement on here? Perhaps an experience requirement, or even a common sense requirement would do.
Why did he have to look over his shoulder when he could look straight at the scoreboard and see he was 50 meters ahead. I understand him looking over once but I was there and he could see himself so far ahead on the final stretch
Have you ever raced before? He was probably in serious pain, even though it wasn't an all out effort from the gun. Winning that race was very important not only to him but more importantly to his TEAM. I doubt he was hyper-analyzing how many times he should look over his shoulder... he was just making sure he won. Not a big deal.

probably to be sure. i undrerstand your point, but they were lapping people and a quick look back is obviously more conclusive than a look at the score board which may have only been focussed on rupp. how do you know he hadn't looked at the scoreboard? he has used it in a lot of races. if this was rupps only race, he wouldn't have done it. he never does it when it's his only or his last race of a championship meet. in short, he had to be sure. there is no room for error here, especially after centrowitz. he's is 100% focussed on that team title and his point in the 5K are very important, but have to come with the 10 points from the 10K.
this is a man who is all about business:

Rupp is a very good businessman.
Oh come on. You and everyone else knows he's trying to pull off a tough double and looking back too many times (sure, he looked back more than necessary...) doesn't make him an asshole or an idiot.
Why is this on letsrun.com front page?
Because the brojos are fanning the flames my friend, their old trick to burn their own bridges. I suspect in 5-10 years they'll look back and wonder where it all went wrong.

No, old trick to get more hits. Ka-ching!
