This is nuts! Who allows their young child to do this to their body? Does anyone know what the long term effects might be from running this type of distance?

There was a young girl named Jennifer Amyx from MD who holds marathon records for ages 9, 10 and 12. Her father (Herb) had something to do with it. Here's a quote from him: "I guess in a sense they (kids who run) are guinea pigs. Medically, scientifically, you have to say there is not enough data to know what the long term effects in small children are." The quote comes from a short film titled "Marathon Fever."

Here are American age group marathon records for females from age 9 through 17.
Carrie Garritson's (age 11 record) father definitely drove her, and her many brothers and sisters (14 kids), to run.
Age // Time // Name // Hometown // Race name, location, date
9 // 3:11:10 // Jennifer Amyx // Woodsboro, MD // Pennsylvania Blue Shield, Harrisburg, PA, 11/04/79
10 // 3:07:01 // Jennifer Amyx // Woodsboro, MD // Rocket City, Huntsville, AL, 12/13/80
11 // 2:49:19 // Carrie Garritson // Fullerton, CA // City Of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, 03/06/88
12 // 2:58:12 // Jennifer Amyx // Woodsboro, MD // Rocket City, Huntsville, AL, 12/11/82
13 // 2:52:58 // Shona Jones // Hastings, NE // Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, 05/10/81
14 // 2:50:48 // Lora Cartwright // Muncie, IN // Three Rivers Festival, IN, 07/18/76
15 // 2:46:23 // Diane Barrett // Fresno, CA // Western Hemisphere, Culver City, CA, 12/05/76
16 // 2:34:24 // Cathy Schiro // Dover, NH // Olympic Trials: Olympia, Olympia, WA, 05/12/84
17 // 2:46:57 // Heike Skaden // Sacramento, CA // Bidwell Classic, Chico, CA, 03/01/80
Those times are mind boggling.
16 // 2:34:24 // Cathy Schiro // Dover, NH // Olympic Trials: Olympia, Olympia, WA, 05/12/84
Where does this rank her on the 1984 performance list?
My god, I was not expecting to see those kinds of times...

9th at the trials. TFN has her at 10 on their listing.
Maybe better known as Cathy O'Brien. Olympian in '88 and '92
I remember hearing about her on the news when she ran this, a couple of months ago. It's sick. She's running XC as a middle-schooler, which alone burns girls out. Her mom is killing her. "You can't win on the trails but you can definitely lose on the trails." That's disgusting that her mom is allowing her to ruin her body. The girl might have enjoyed the ultra but by running those distances now, she's giving up what could be a life-time of running to injury.
Please expand your thoughts and explain this comment to me...

Other than Cathy Schiro (O'Brien) I don't know if any the ladies on the age group marathon list ever accomplished anything with running. Maybe someone on this forum knows if of the other ladies did.
50mpw is nothing. she should be doing 70-80 at least.
Next thing you know parents will be shipping their kids off to practice gymnastics 8 hours a day with illusions of them competing in the olympics.
Funny, everybody is so quick to throw out negative comments. The truth is, none of you know the long term effects so shut it! I'm sure there's a right and a wrong way to train for 50 miles just as there is for a 5k.
The ones with the negative comments are the ones with the fat, yes "FAT" kids who are sitting at home ruining their bodies and brains on video games. The fact is, 50 mpw isn't too much for most "healthy" kids to handle. Good for her and her parents. She'll probably lead a much healthier lifestyle from now on as she has the knowledge how to eat right and exercise. No wonder our country is going down the tubes. Can't anybody say anything positive anymore? What the hell is wrong with people these days?
Oh yeah, I'm writing this 1 day after my 13 year old son ran his first 50 mile ultra. Guess what... He did it in a foot of snow and in 8 degree weather! Yeah I know - what a horrible parent I must be. I should be crucified for teaching him the proper way to eat, train and run. Did I mention that not only was he injury free after but, he never even had 1 blister. Out of the 60 starters he finished 35th. Oh... And he's going to school tomorrow. Like I said, there's a right way to train and a wrong way to train. I may not be an expert but, my kid did it. Now stop being so God Damn negative!

Meh. When I was 7, I spent 8 hours chasing a rabbit down, in July. 35th out 60? No animal instinct. Move on to something he's good at.
Dear Sam,
We are coming for you.

Bob Kennedy ran 30-40 mpw- MAX as an 18 yr old national champ. For the most part that high of mileage at that you g an age is an admission of ZERO talent.
I'd rather have a 4:10 miler at 30 mpw as a college frosh Latham a 4:06 miler at 100 mpw.
waste of time.
that is a retardedly obvious statement. 4 seconds =/= 70 addition mpw. shut up you tool.

How dare you make a rational post on this forum.
I have a 16 yr old daughter that wants to run a 50k trail race with me next year when she's 17. I don't see the problem. Not like we're going to actually 'race'. It's more of an all day hike/run.
Mooooooooochelle says to play 60, so why is playing for 6-7 hours so bad? Should kids only be allowed to play outside for an hour a day? Bring them inside after an hour & make them play video games so they don't 'burn out' playing tag or hoops in the neighborhood?
When I was a kid, we'd take off on our bikes in the AM & be gone all day. Or we'd hike off in the woods & not be back til dinner time. I don't see that running a 50 miler is that different, unless there's competitive pressure to run it at a certain pace.
