no one? 5th best all time
no one? 5th best all time
no love for field events here.
That's right. I doubt 10% the people on this board have a clue what a good mark in the long jump even is, thought they'll **** themselves anytime an American runs sub-28 in the 10k. Most distance runners don't know anything about track and field that doesn't involve running 2 or more laps.
When he jumped it, the crowd was cheering before he touched the sand. He got up and ran onto the track, almost getting run over by the two leading steeplers, then ran and bounced around until the measurement was shown. I've never really followed the field events much, but seeing that got me excited for the long jump...and from what I could tell from the RunnerSpace NBC videos, the only thing they showed from the entire event was one (head-on) shot of Saladino jumping, and a mention that Phillips would remain in the lead after five jumps. It's really too bad that the telecasts for track meets make them so boring...if everyone at home saw what I saw live, there would be ten threads about this.
8.74 ( -1.2 )
8.95 ( +0.3 )wr
dwight's jump works out to ~ 8.84 basic
wr is ~ 8.92 basic
he's 8cm off the wr which can be just the difference between a slightly short take-off + cool weather, & not...
you've just witnessed the best field event performance in 18y

The weird thing for me in field events is that I know what the world records are in meters, and if you said someone jumped 8.74m, I would have been really excited, because I know the world record is 8.95m. Problem is, I don't know what those records equate to in feet and inches. I know the men's high jump, 2.45 = 8 feet or so, and for pole vault 19 feet is rare air, but that's about it. Throws and horizontal jumps I just don't have a clue in the Imperial system. So when NBC gives us Imperial results, I don't know what to think.
However, they were kind enough to show the big jump, the excitement of all involved, and explain that it was the 5th best of all time, so I knew something huge had happened. I just didn't start a thread on it.
agreed...by the way, how many think 9m can be broken soon? its been 18 years! since mike powell broke beamon's record. will we have to wait 23 years like back then?
If Phillips would have had a 2.0 wind at his back he would've been really close to 9.0.
I also noticed that he was wearing Starter brand gear, I've only seen that brand at Wal-Mart, he must be between contracts, or just not getting the love from Nike currently.
9 meters will happen soon. Saladino had a 9+ foul last year, as did Pedrosa a few years back.

most valuable performance in the history of track and field by scoring tables:
1) jan zelezny 98.48 1346 points (1996)
(Nowadays you may win an olympic medal from 86 metres LOL)
2) Usain bolt 19.30 1338 points
3) mike powell 8.95 1328 points
Dwight philips is not up there BY FAR, impressive though
Hope this helps.
i think having to reference scoring tables shows how much one doesn't know about the strength of a performance. 8.74 or better has only been jumped (wind legal) a handful of times. This wasn't at altitude, or on a track is borderline illegal because of hardness, and there was a legit headwind. It doesn't really matter how 8.74 compares to Zelezny's javelin WR. It is impressive by itself.
I said its impressive of course, but somebody else said it was the most impressive performance in T&F in 18 years and that is not true imho, thats why I used scoring tables, which are useful to an extent.
talking about 8.74, ok, just a handfull of times has been jumped, but last year 8.73 saladino and this year 8.71 sebastian bayer indoor (totally legal) or Loúis Tsátoumas 8.66 in 2007,so it looks to be 'somehow' achievable.
Of course 8.74 is amazing, but you can not compare something amazing to something absolutely epic like zelezny or bolt performances which look like that no one can even be really close to in years. (just try to calculate the difference in percentage beetwen zelezny and bolt and the second best in history (excluding MJ) in their respective events and do it later with dwight philips performace)not even close. (that even happens with other world records, which shows that this level of greatness is extraordinary difficult to achieve, maybe one person each 20 years or so, I think)
Study hall I was just trying to give credit where credit is due, anyway I hope the world record will be beaten this year, can you imagine something like tokio 1991?
sorry for my english.
It's a brilliant performance
The feat would get a lot more attention if it was stated as 28-8.
