A class act. It says in the article that he chose Marshall because of its not as well off financially and because there are many minorities there. A nice gesture considering he could have gone to a well off, xc powerhouse school like Jesuit, Central Catholic, West Linn etc that are in the same region
What a great move. Hopefully he can inspire kids at Marshall to turn out next fall. At their district meet last year they only ran 5 guys and 4 girls, and were incomplete in both varsity races. Chapa should be commended for volunteering in a situation that won't be easy, but where he has a chance to help make a difference.
I will be interested to see how Mr. Chapa will do. Great to see him pick Marshall. Marshall already has an excellent coach, Tony Cantwell.
As far as schools nearby, Grant, Cleveland, and Franklin, all already have strong xc programs. He lives in SE Portland, next to Laurelhurst park.

Chapa himself had one of the all-time great HS coaches, the only one (that I know of) to have three students under 9:00 for the full two miles--at the same time: Don Candiano.
Of course, the flip side is that the same three went 1-2-5, IIRC, at the Indiana State xc meet, and the team still lost...
We stayed at the same motel for the Stanford invite as them, and it was cool to talk to the team members.
Interesting to see if there will be whinging about these kids having access to altitude house, underwater treadmills, Alter-G, etc. It's only fair after all the crap that was slung in Rupp's direction.

Rudy and Alberto are both religious guys, and straight arrows. The crap that has been flung at Alberto here, is just that, crap. If you do not think so, you need to either grow up, or evolve your intelligence and philosophy.
Rudy Chapa was my assistant coach at Marshall High School a decade ago. Here is what he told me about his high school.training. Rudy ran up to 120 miles a week with daily 90 minute runs on grass in the morning. We never discussed his afternoon workouts in any detail , but briefly discussed his career at the University of Oregon where he never ran more than 75 miles a week. Rudy qualified for the Olympics at 5k as well, I think did his teammate Bill Mchesney. His roommate at Upf O was Alberto Salazar who he described as similar in terms of mileage to his high school training on mileage. The United States boycotted the 1980 Olympic games denying athletes from competing in Russia. In retaliation the USSR boycotted the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Rudy went on to break the American record in 1981 in the 3000, is a member of the NCAA Champion Cross Country Champion Univeristy of Oregon Ducks, continuing a legacy of greatness in Oregon Distance running that continues to this day. Rudy told me," We weren't just the best in America, we were among the best in the World". How and why he volunteered to be my assistant is another story. Has to do with a Hispanic kid named Gustavo Cortez who would grind me up and spit me out in training runs and was 5 A district Champion; his junior year defeating Daniel Wynn he had success at U of O. Rudy Chapa still holds the High School Record in the 10000' He ran 28:32, The Newbury Park kids have a great shot at that Next Season, What would really be cool is if Chapa Coached a kid or kids at the High School he Coaches to break his 10000 High School Record.
