The regional experiment is a failure. The West regional isn't even a track meet. Look at how many events are straight final. Just by entering you make the national pool. Look at the East where in many events you must WIN your heat to make it to Saturday.
The meets may all share the name "regional" but that is where the similarities end.
For the many many division 1 schools in the East, the regional has become their nationals. Their athletes aren't good enough to advance, so this is their big dance. And most of the schools that fit that profile are in favor of the Regional meet as this is there chance to run against the "big dogs." These schools far outnumber the "big dogs" who don't like having another step along the way for their best kids to advance. In their eyes all that can happen is a false start, a dropped stick or an injury, all of which they see as unnecessary.
Strength and equity are not qualities of geography.
Now those who have tried a political means to eliminate regionals have a convenient excuse of the bad economy.
I think the confluence of events will have the NCAA going back to the desecnding order list just like indoors, and just like divsion 2 and division 3.
And then all of the calendars will change.
