Rono, of course, is by far the tops. Rupp has done some serious damage as far as records, titles, etc. Who would you rank as top five of all time - mainly looking at x-c, 3000, 5000, 10000 and indoors

Sulemain Nyambui probably has to be in there
Rono
Ryun
Nyambui
Prefontaine
??????
Fernandez
Rono
Vail
Peter Rono. You got to love that the olympic gold medalist can't win the NCAAs.

Rupps up there, he mentioned he may wear his oregon jersey through USA's (also he'd probably get to europe before that?). Does that mean that if he hits fast marks that they could count as collegiate records? he could certainly get the 10K CR and the 5K ACR and possibly the 5K CR.
If he doubles and wins both at NCAA outdoor he has to be among the very top. Chelanga is a very good runner and he's run him over 3 times already, plus the dominatinig triple indoors is nothing to brush off. Some very good runners in those fields.
yes rupp like all ncaa track and field athletes, times count as ncaa records until august 31st 2009 (or more correctly until august 31st of whatever year the athlete is a senior). why it does not count until december 31st i dont know. i was thinking about this as brussels which has a great track 10k is on september 4th which is to late for ncaa record
He will get lapped at Brussels.

Sulemain for sure for both time and number of titles although i think he was 28ys old when he graduated.
Pre would also be ahead based on championships although he didn't run indoor track
close
Meb, Falcon

i've seen pre run several indoor races in an oregon jersey, did he just skip NCAA's ala fernandez?
Yeah, I saw Pre run indoors as well.
He didn't skip indoor NCAA's ala Fernadez, Fernadez hadn't been born yet.
Oregon did not focus on indoor nationals.
He's behind Suzy Favor, too. He might be on a par with Kipyego, though I think she must have more titles than him.
Peter Rono was the 1988 NCAA 1500m champion and 800m champion but in Division II. Mount St Mary's was D2 then and there was some way for D2 athletes who met the auto standard for D1 to get into the meet
Until Rupp runs a world record in college I wouldn't put him up there. Ryun broke the mile wr in college. I believe Rono broke a few wrs too. Unless he runs close to or a least near a couple of world records, I would say he's not really up their with Ryun or Rono. Even Fernandez has the world junior indoor mile wr, though less contested by a lot of young Africans its still a wr of some sort. Rupp has no kind of wr, has never been near one and probably won't for some time if at all. I just don't think Rupp is truly world class despite all his recent success. I think when you look at Ryun and Rono, you can truly say those guys were world class when they were in college. Not to take anything away from Rupp's accomplishments, but he is nowhere near world class, yet.
I forgot about Gerry Lindgren too, who also broke and tied the 6 mile world record just barely losing to Billy Mills while in college. So I would put Rono, Ryun, and Lindgren as a solid top three of all time. No world record in college, you can't even be in the greatest of all time conversation.
He wasn't the olympic champion at the time. Once he became olympic champion he was unable to win in 1989,1990, and I believe 1991.

show your ignorance about track and field much?
what you write is idiotic.
first, the whole planet has changed as far as running is concerned since Henry Rono's day.
you may never see another usa collegiate athlete run a world record again. the records are lower, and the hot spots for distance runners have shifted from Finland, NZ, to UK, to Kenya, to East Africa etc.
if you want to compare Rupp, or even downgrade him, a fair measure would be home many titles, or all american designations.
times are relative, and wr's irrelevant.
the fact that you can post your opinion on world records, and not even know if or what Henry Rono's world records were while he was in college... show's both your laziness and ignorance.
not to mention that this thread has so far missed listing a whole gang of guys and gals that had great collegiate careers in the usa...
I may have been lazy not looking up Rono's records but I do know he had 4 of them or so. That doesn't mean I'm ignorant of track and field, I just didn't feel like googling right then but I think you got my point. As far as world records, I believe your statements a are cop out. Young African college age boys run in the range of world records all the time. I know the landscape has changed as far as hot spots but that doesn't change what Ryun and Lindgren did as far as their world records. If you think Rupp is as great as a racer as either one of them at this moment while he's in college, I would agree with you more. I tend to think Rupp's not world class yet. Several distance stars in the US have been near the top of the world lists while in college. I don't think Rupp's there yet. If we just use titles and all-american honors, we cold list a thousand different guys. Despite the fact the landscape of the international running scene has changed, I think the best measure of the greatest of all time is still how far up are your times related to world rankings or world records.
"cop out" ?
what are you, 60 years old?
rupp qualified for the olympic 10k final as a junior in college, a hell of an accomplishment by any american born runner in any era.
so of course he is not "world class."
your other contentions have been debated on these forums ad naseum...

No, he doesn't. But then again, YOU are the same idiot who insisted that the Rockets were going to defeat the Lakers. I already said that I hope you know a hell of a lot more about running than you do about NBA basketball. Apparently you DON'T!!!
