It looks like at least half the stadium seating is empty, if not more. If this is what top tier competition will draw to a meet, something is drastically wrong with our sport.

Isn't Carson sort of in the middle of nowhere?
yup, right in the middle of the largest metropolitan area in the US

You guys must not be from ca. Very warm day today, close to record high temps so you can't blame people for not going. If NBA was played outside on a very warm day do you think many people would go? But I do agree, our sport seems like its fading drastically with spectators
you do realize there are empty seats at yankee stadium, as well as many others across the country? the preakness has the lowest attendance today since 1983.
call me crazy, but i think it has something to do with the economy.
nope...there is a serious lack of public interest and that somehow needs to change ASAP.

well preakness had down attendance this year because they didn't allow alcohol in the infield.
i highly doubt anything will chagne unless every runner turns into german fernandez than maybe the seats will be full everywhere
The Yankee Stadium analogy doesn't cut it. They have 81 home games and will average at least 35,000 spectators per game. This meet, a one of a kind item for that area, probably had 6,000 tops, and I'm probably being generous.
I was there. It was not 'really hot'. It was comfortable and got cool toward the end when they ran the steeple and 5k as the sun was setting. The crowd WAS embarassing. African Americans support track and field in the US in attendance much better than the caucasion majority, based on their percentage of population. Jamacians and Ethiopians probably outnumbered the white fans; and most of the white fans were aging baby boomers. Where in the hell are the teens and young adults?
The meet was way overpriced and not marketed well at all. $15 for parking is an absolute joke. The meet looked like a high school dual meet. Pretty pathetic.
uh....not exactly.. wrote:

There on this message board saying sprinters are lazy and don't care about the sport.
well it was really hot in ca today so you cant blame the spectators...blame all the drug cheats like in our sport....all the young kids are not going to spend their saturday night watching track and field unless german is there maybe rupp, webb wouldd be pushing it...
College and HS conference meets are today. Dumbshit move by the organizers to schedule the meet on this date. Two years ago the stands were jammed on the homestretch side and 80% full on the backstretch. NO advertising and the Home Depot Center didn't even advertise it on their site or emails. That said, the parking is ridiculous at $15 - though they are very PC in dropping it down to $5 for events that are crammed with, eh, "undocumented" immigrants. Carson is a dump for the most part. Very high crime from a mix of latino, black, and Samoan gangs. Most people outside LA County aren't aware of this. Officials fudge the crime stats for the whole state to keep the tourists coming.
Finally, the meet was broadcast on EPSN 2? Why pay for tickets and put up with idiots like the Ethiopian track fans who just get up after one of their stars runs and wander around the stands in everyone's way. No joke. Two years ago was hilarious Never seen such a self absorbed punch of people who possessed a complete lack of awareness of the other spectators and action around them. Almost all of them were like three year olds.

You must hide in your basement 24/7. Carson is nothing like you describe. Besides; you get off the freeway, drive about 1 mile on a 4 lane blvd. and right into the Home Depot Stadium parking lot.
Maybe you'd be better off following hockey. Or perhaps a rodeo.

Hockey gets big crowds in LA. So do the rodeos. They make sure they don't screw up poor scheduling. Then again, So Cal is so stuffed with illegals what kind of fan base is left? The only running they're interested in is from ICE or the police.
Curious: $10 tickets are overpriced?

You're right. I go Kings' games and almost all of them are sell-outs. If you go to the once or twice a year events here in Socal, the gouging is ridiculous when it comes to parking. I've noticed what the guy posted earlier too. When they have teams in from Mexico for soccer matches at the Home Depot Center, they drop the price of parking simply because of the make up of the crowd, poor folks. Right.
I always get the feeling that the people collecting the money for parking are skimming like mad at the Home Depot Center and the Nokia Center in downtown LA. I was going to go to the meet today, and then decided to watch on TV instead.
- Carson is a few blocks from Compton...enough said there.
- Zero effort in advertising here in SoCal. If I wasn't a track fan, I would have no idea that this was taking place.
- Having this meet at Mt. SAC would draw almost a thousand more spectators. All the runners live in the Orange County/Inland Empire area and not LA.
- Move it a couple hours later. Good for the fans and athletes. You can't possibly believe you'll have decent distance performances if you have them before 8pm in late May around here.
- It's true, parking is $15
