http://www.epoboost.com/Products.html They list the ingredients, are there actually any in there that would benefit a runner? Other than the combo of iron and vitamin C? |

6% rda iron? expensive junk |
| what??? |

It's not the iron or any of that junk. It's the echinacea. There's been at least one study that I'm aware of that shows supplementation to increase EPO. |

do you have a link to that study? or a study for any ingredient in the stuff? |

Ok, I found the study and they used 8 GRAMs of echinacea to see their results, so the EPO boost would not work most likely. Where do they sell pills cheap enough to take 8 grams per day? |

http://www.supplementgenius.com/2008/08/14/echinacea-increase-epo/ Feasability: The cost of Echinacea if you bought directly from the factories that processes the herb is roughly $50 per kilogram. This translates to about 40 cents per day if you used the correct dose of 8 grams. Now this is affordable for many of us but unfortunately you cannot buy directly from the factories you must by from a retail store like GNC , Vitamin Shoppe , Vitamin World or online from companies with aggressive pricing like Bodybuilding.com in the U.S. or SupplementsCanada.com in Canada or Tropicana if you’re in the U.K. Supplement Scam So here’s what some unscrupulous supplement companies will do when they see this research or read this Blog: Decide to come out with an EPO boosting supplement. Just for fun let’s call this bullshit product "SUPER-EPO ". They will then add an "affordable" dose of Echinacea (likely 1000 mg) to SUPER-EPO and put all kinds of "other ingredients" in with it so that when you read the Supplement Facts you think you’re buying more than just Echinacea! They will then add in some B Vitamins and key Minerals like Iron to assist with making red blood cells and transferring oxygen in the body (vitamins and minerals cost only pennies to add also). Lastly, even though they aren’t giving you the needed 8 grams per day, they will still refer to the same research study above on their label, website and maybe even in their ads! Don’t believe them. If you’re going to try using Echinacea to increase levels of EPO make sure you use 8 grams per day. And of course, always consult a physician before "experimenting" with supplements. Almost all of this stuff is just trash. I don't doubt that taking a supplement here or there will help to fill in the blanks where you may have some dietary deficiency, but if you're wanting performance enhancing benefits you'll have to go whole hog and actually buy the real stuff. The real stuff is illegal, expensive, dangerous, and not easy to get. Unless you have the cash to blow at a AntiAging Clinic, a hook up with someone at your local gym, you visit mexico often, or you are a doctor and you can write your own script, just give it up and run more. |

They list a handful of clinical studies that support each ingredient. Check out http://www.epoboost.com/Research-EPO-BOOST.html Thoughts? |

You need way more than the 1g of Echinacea to see a benefit, so they are a waste of money. |

ah, I see now they advise taking 4 pills a day so its 8g of echinacea. There are way cheaper ways to get it though. |

Standard echinacea purpurea at GNC is only 400mg per capsule (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133979), I would have to take 20 capsules per day to get the 8 grams needed. 100 caps echinacea at GNC = $6.30, need 20caps/day x 30days = 600 for one month, so 6 bottles at GNC = $38 for echinacea alone. Iron is another $10 (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3113945) |

then don't buy the standard echinacea purpurea at GNC. You can get 1200mg per pill, I got mine on Ebay for about $8 per bottle of 120 pills. Iron can also be found for a lot cheaper, you can get bottles at Wal-mart for $3. |

Don't mess around with high doses of iron unless there's some medical reason for you to be doing so. If you're trying to throw your hemocrit up through the roof you should be medically monitored anyway. |

The study listed on the site did have convincing results and I was looking at a forum on another site about EPO boost and there were several people who tried it and said it helped. ``a href="http://linksleeve.com/jk.cgi?i=vonBDJq&d=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.roadbikereview.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D172083&n=30" target="_self"%%EPO-Boost Reviews |

Taking 8grams of echinacea, is this harmful? |

Echinacea loses its properties very quickly when dried. When mine are flowering, I just eat a few petals and leaves every few days, fresh right off the plant. You can also pick the newly opening flowers and leaves and tincture them fresh (better than drying). The roots are the most potent, but you need to wait til they are a few years old and sizable enough to harvest. I generally wait to harvest roots until the first full moon after the first frost in the fall. The frost and cold weather force the plants' energy back into the ground, so the root is even more potent then. It is best to immediately tincture up the roots with the rest of the plant. If you do want to dry it all, be sure to use it within a few months---the freshness really makes the difference! |
