Amazing race! Let the discussion begin!
The season isn't over yet. Congrats to both Derrick and GF. It'll be interesting to see how NCAA's plays out. Regardless of who ends up with the record, these two are some of the best distance runners America has ever had (at least at that age).
Wait until NCAA'S. All you Dee Dee'a out there are running out of excuse for German to lose. He will be fit as a fiddle by then, then look out.
Fernandez didn't run for 2 weeks... he is going to easily beat Derrick in a few weeks.
Not for long!
Who cares German is a lot hotter (and Jager!!)
true as that may be, i don't think a healthy/in shape fernandez would have ran much faster. had fernandez been healthy, i dont think he would have ran faster than 13:25, he probably would have been more around 13:28. however, both derrick and german ran amazing races and i cant wait for ncaa's!
You think missing time up to World Cross and after world cross only added 3 seconds to German's time? You ever run before?
If you watch the race Fernadez got boxed in with three laps to go. He was right on Luchini when Derrick came by. The Jager and Mead came by. It was back to single file with Fernandez in fourth. Then with about 1K to go Jager, Derrick, and Mead broke away. Fernandez was out of position. Fernandez had to make a big move with 700 to go to come back to the front group. They were running a 63 second quarter and Fernandez had to make up 10 yards.
Finally when at 300 to go Fernandez got owned, he had already made a big move, I'm not surprised that he got burned.
Fernandez lost the race due to poor position late in the race. I'm not saying he would have won it, but he didn't put himself in a position to win.
Congrat's to Derrick, that's a super time for a Junior, I hope they both continue to develop and represent the USA for years to come.
German > Chris...enough said
I really don't give a crap which one is better. Fernandez might have won without the missed training. That's not how it went. Hopefully they will race again this year and many more times before their careers are over.

That's how Smith is training him though... so there's not going to be any change.
Derrick is running smart, training well, and he is now a better runner than German.
This was a fabulous race.

well klefzd, it depends how much time off german had. a few days in training wouldn't have made a big enough difference to drastically change the outcome of that race. im not saying that derrick is better than fernandez, but i think they are alot closer then many people realize and then many people give derrick credit for. fernandez was only 7 seconds ahead of derrick at world cross, and although he had a stress reaction, he was still able to train.
oh, by the way, i have ran before, im not just talking out of my ass.
Everything's always that black and white, huh J.R.? Haha. Letsrun at it's finest!
Two guys take down Rupp's 5k record in no small margin. The question is, who gets the jr. 10k record.

luke or derrick. luke has a great shot at it now if the race gets moving at ncaa's, but it will probably surge all over the place.

I wouldn't count Fernandez out just yet. There's a good possibility that all three run significantly faster than Rupp did as a jr.
While I don't doubt that Fernandez wasn't in peak form due to his lost training, I don't understand the bitter dispute as to who is better. Who cares? Both of these guys, along with other notables, herald the future of American distance running. We should be celebrating what Derrick accomplished -- an AJR on his home track no less. And I believe he's only the second American born runner ever to break 13:30 as a 19-year old (though I could be wrong here). I can still remember when Olympians Adam Goucher and Marc Davis ran something like 13:45 as freshman and just how ridiculous and untouchable those times seemed back then. Not to mention, Derrick attends Stanford, where the intellectual prowess of one's peer group only exacerbates the pressure cooker. This fall's NCAA XC championship should be a barn burner.

Very true.
