Long legs, great shape. But, break 5? When Lance tried to run a mile, without having run much or trained much, he ran a 5:15 (in basketball shoes). So, I bet Kobe wouldn't be any faster. Probably 5:30.
I say 4:55.
I realize that "basketball shape" is different than "track shape", but a mile is close enough to a sprint that Kobe could run a decent time.
I remember Rip Hamilton saying that he could run a mile is 4:20-4:30ish. While this is probably untrue, I think you guys are underestimating the amount of stamina required to be a star in the NBA.
Probably 5:30
Maybe 4:40 if Katelyn Faber could manage a 4:30-35
They do play 82 games a year, and practice nearly everyday. Also Kobe hasn't had much of an off season with the Olympics and all.
I would agree with very high 4s. He is thinner and moves more quickly on the court than James. The Lebron 5k is a joke--this one, I can see happening.
That said, Lebron could probably run about 5:30 in a single mile.
If u are going off his defensive then 6-7 minutes is most likely.

Hey Pat how's it hangin
Kobe couldn't break 6 if his life depended on it. He may be a decent basketball player but he would suck at pretty much every other sport including running.
Rip should have been running in circles tonight after the cavs beat them down 77-50 after 3 quarters. He was sitting on the bench when the Piston scrubs came back on the Cav scrubs and Lebron,Mo,and Andy had to go back in to ice the victory.

6? Really? You don't really believe this statement.
4:50 to 5:20. I think he would beat lebron since kobe's been playing longer and has more court mileage. I think all basketball players would make good middle d runners. Kobe could be a black craig mottram.
I feel like we are giving too much credit to these basketball players. I'd say high 5s for the smaller players who were capable of running a mile.

I think you guys are giving waaaay to much fitness credit to the ballers. I've coached for a long time and had many 2-3 sport athlets run track (admittedly none of them were the best NBA player on the planet). But the tyoe of aerobic fitness needed for a mile goes beyond their training. However I bet most could do pretty well at 400.

Well this is just plain wrong.
Kobe could probably get around 5 minutes right now, just from the shape he's in. If he trained for it, and if he hadn't lifted so much the past 5 years, I'd say he could get to the mid 4's.
As for other sports. I find it hard to believe that someone of that size, speed, agility, and great hand eye coordination couldn't excel as a wide receiver, or a volleyball player.

I agree. I think many of you are underestimating how difficult it is to run a sub-5:00 mile for even highly trained athletes. Yes, to most of us, breaking 5:00 seems remarkably easy. But we have a level of specific aerobic conditioning that Kobe simply does not.
Plus you have to factor in weight. Kobe is 6'6" and 205 pounds. I'm 6'5" and 166 pounds. I cannot imagine carrying around an extra 40 pounds for an all out mile, muscle or not, and getting anywhere close to under 5:00.
Maybe some of the thinner, smaller guards, like Rip, could approach 5. I was at a summer basketball camp back in the day and doing a little running after the day's basketball activities. The camp counselors said Jim Paxson (john's brother) ran a mile in 5:00 the previous week at the camp. But he apparently regularly ran 2-3 miles a day for conditioning. Most b-ballers do not do that. I would guess Kobe would be around 5:20 to 5:30. Lebron much farther back. Lebron weighs 260! No way someone moves that kind of mass very quickly for much farther than a quarter mile. And that's about the max distance b-baller's sport trains them to do. Run 20 to 60 seconds, rest, repeat.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
