I'm a high school girl who will be a senior next year. I am looking to improve a huge amount because I really want to make the state meet (I am in a very competitive state so it's pretty hard to qualify).
Last summer I averaged around 40-50 mpw, building up to that with a highest week of 55.
Then the winter after cross country, I averaged around 50-60, with a highest week of 65.
Starting around mid-May, I have until the end of August when the season begins, with the first races being in September. The reason should go on until sometime in November (if I make the state meet, end of November).
I know I'm going to have to up the mileage a lot because I need to improve by more than a minute. I also have not really done doubles (I've gotten up to 60 in singles) so I'm going to add in doubles 5 days a week, building up to that. I also have more than 3 months to build a base, so I was thinking something like this:
May - get up to 50 by the end of May (something I have done before)
June - build up to 70 by the end of June, mostly easy/medium runs, 1 tempo a week, and maybe 1200/mile repeats or 200s (like Summer of Malmo says)
July - get up to 85, same thing with the tempos, etc
August - go up to around 90-95 (maybe 100 if I can) and just hold this, same thing as before with tempos/200s/1200 or mile repeats
I'm thinking runs of 7-8 on most days, a run of around 9-10 on another day, and then 12-13 as a long run... with doubles of 3-5 miles 5 days a week.
During the season it's going to be harder to maintain the mileage since on the actual team, we only run maybe 30 mpw (last season I had to try to add to the warm up/cooldown/get in the long run on Sunday to maintain the mileage somewhat). I'm thinking about dropping down to in the 70s during the season, keeping all the doubles and just adding to the warm up/cooldown.
Does this sound like a good plan for the summer? I'm going to also do core every other day. Thanks.
