I won't be giving any more money to the Greater Washington Sports Alliance... what a bush league production last night and today.
Just curious, as I was planning on running next year, what was wrong with it?
I didn't run it this year, but went to watch some friends who did. Beautiful day for a run. Little chilly to begin with, but then it warmed up. Also, I've heard rave reviews about the course showing off the Capital, Mall, as well as some great neighborhoods.
Too bad their website doesn't have the results. But people don't run marathons for the websites.
I did the half -- I thought most of it was fine.
My big issue was bag check -- when I check a bag at a race of this size and expense, I expect it to be stored in a location with controlled access, and then handed back to me by someone who checks the number on my bag against my number.
Nope. When we finished, the bags were all piled together (separate piles for separate number ranges), and everybody just dug through to get theirs.
I never check anything important anyway (ran with my house keys on me), but it was a bit disconcerting.
I ran the half as well. I enjoyed the course--decent hills, no bad turns, no tight spots, plus great scenery. The crowd support was pretty sparse, but I guess that's the result of having a relatively new race on a cold day in parts of the city where you're not likely to find big crowds at 7 AM. Having the Metro open early to transport runners was great--three blocks from my hotel to the station and a quiet train ride to the start.
Bag check was chaotic--it took forever to check my bag in and another 20 minutes to find my stuff after the race. This wouldn't have been a big deal if I was a local with friends and family around, but it's not so cool when you're on your own and they've got your warm clothing. They really need to improve that for next year and plan for bigger groups of people. Signage at the start was also pretty poor. The sun wasn't up until just before the start of the race and there wasn't much guidance for navigating corrals, tents, and the like. Packet pickup at the armory on Friday was also a pain--long lines to get in through security and the guards were taking water bottles away, something that the organizers might have wanted to tell a bunch of hydration obsessed runners. Once you got inside, getting your stuff wasn't a problem.
As far as the big stuff--timing, course, and stuff like that, I think they did a good job. Now that they attracted a sizable field, they need to work on finessing the details.
Suntrust National Marathon 2009 results and winners:
Patrick Moulton of Providence, Rhode Island won the full men’s marathon at a time of 2:21:19.
Jeanette Seckinger of Massachusetts won the women’s full marathon at a time of 2:48:41.
Hirut Mandefro won and set a new record in the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:15:36.
Demesse Tefera won in the men’s half marathon with a time of 1:05.
BAA sweep
It's Freedman, does this really surprise anyone? They have two speeds, slow, and extra slow. Maybe we'll get something by 7pm. Or next year they can start the race at 4am so we can see results by 4pm..
Gee wiz...what is the hurry on the results? I want to see them too but it isn't life or death...
Still no full results nearing 6:30 p.m. east coast time. They do have age group results up. What happened to the Kenyans that were leading the marathon by a big margin? Was surprised that Moulton and Wardian took the two first spots. About 1:45 into the marathon it didn't sound like it would play out that way.

This isn't a group of boyscouts volunteering to do the results with their trusty stopwatches. It's a "professional" company who will most likely bill over 20k for their "services" today. 12 hours after guntime is not acceptable and being in the capitol region we should expect more from someone we're paying that much $$ to. If I was this late submitting one of my reports, of course I'd have someone to answer to. The first wave of these results (half marathon) should not have been posted one minute later than 9am...here we are nearing 7pm and reading NBC for our updates...it's crap
Looks like full results are up now (6:50 p.m. EDT). Also looks like a cheater or two in the top 5 of the half marathon. No 10K time, and a stellar 1:07:15 net for this 35 year old woman.
5 1/320 1/2281 1:18:20* 1:07:15 5:08 Michelle Fowler 35 F 4310
This isn't a significant marathon race. It's a local level race for hobbyjoggers, as evidenced by the winning times.
There's a mistake in the official results. It says Seckinger set a new record @ 2:48:39, but in 2007 there was a 2:44:58 (http://nationalmarathon.com/Results/2007/full-age-group.asp).
Given that the race only goes back to 2006, you think this could be tracked better
Hey "Terps..",
Your basketball team sucks.
It isn't a world-class race by any means, but at least has prize money (unlike the Marine Corps Marathon).
Hobbyjoggers I know don't run sub-2:25, but maybe I just hang out in the wrong crowds.
Uh, I don't have a basketball team, so you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, moron. Google my name and get a clue.
So how many sub-2:25 finishers were there? I'd be surprised if there were even 50 (out of nearly 1400) under 3 hours and more than 10 under 2:30. There are dozens of races with that type of field, they're nothing special.
When you say "record" are you referring to a course record or a race record. 2:48:39 can be a course record and not necessarily be the fastest time in the history of the National Marathon. Step back and think for a second before calling people out on mistakes.
"Please allow 48 - 72 hours to respond to any discrepencies"
WTF? I just looked at the results and they are extremely sloppy. Is this their first race? How could they not investigate and find simple errors in the results that I could and I wasn't even there!! poor poor poor..
