Galen actually has Exercise Enduced Asthma, and has suffered attacks during races. He collapsed in the 2002 Footlocker race and could not breathe as he had an Asthma attack. Fortunately it has not seemed to happen often. Not sure how frequent those with Asthma have serious attacks. Anyone know?

I've seen that happen to a few people in my day. Not very common, but it DOES happen.

Suffered the NY sophomore FL curse (aka didn't qualify as a junior).
Made it as a senior, ran some quality marks. Believe around a 4:12.xx? indoor mile (Hispanic Games?)
Believe he's ran at American University the last few years. Put up some decent marks, but never made any drastic improvements.
He had some real quality races against Brian Dalpiaz back when T-shirt was a youngin'
I want to say T-shirt had some medical issues in college (I know Dalpiaz did).
I lost a bet that year, thinking that the West would take 2nd place. Its so sad to have to live thru that again. All Galen would have had to do was get in the top 15 and I would have won that cup of coffee.

I'm actually a supporter of Rupp. I just found these results and was wondering why he got a DNF. Seems like a fair curiosity to me. I don't think he's ever DNFed otherwise so maybe something major happened.
Shalane Flanagan DNF'd at a regional in HS from collasping after running too hard. She turned out ok!
Thanks for this explanation. I recently saw those 2002 results and thought a Rupp DNF (instead of DNS) was weird.
He ran 3:44 1500 and 4:02 mile at UVA.
Also heard he holds the record at UVA for streaking the lawn and is best friends with the former coach, Jason Vigilante.
