I travel often and it stikes me as odd that while in Massachusetts if you make eye contact with a stranger it is regarded as being rude. Yet, in Louisiana if you don't make eye contact and offer a greeting then locals consider that to be impolite.

I dunno, maybe it has to do with cultural norms and mores that vary by region.

F*** you. Im sorry if the south is actually kind to each other. The north are always pissed off because they are stuck in the cold ass weather. The southern people are nice to everyone unless you are an annoying ass tourist.

I agree- I'm from the north and when I first moved down here for school I was absolutely floored by the difference and it took some getting used to. But now that I've been down here for 8 years I've decided that southerners are fake nice. Men will hold doors for you, drivers will let you merge, everything is "yes please" and "no thank you"...but god I miss that brash northern attitude!! I dislike feeling like I have to be happy and friendly to every random person I see. I like to tell people what I think of them, if I meet someone and don't like them right off the bat I don't talk to them- a southerner will just keep going and going and going until they find something likeable.....
the people in my town up north are MUCH more geniune, even if they don't come across as nicer people.
Livin' in da south is overrated. Mild winters are great, but summer in the south is awful for many, many reasons. List of why the south is a terrible place to live:
Bugs (everywhere, all the time except Nov.-Feb. ---and even then they appear if it's above 60 degrees...this is much, much more annoying than hearing someone say "pop")
Racism (yes it exists all over, but it's blatant down here...it's 2009 and, by the way, our President is black)
Politics (we live in a world where it's "who you know, not what you know"...well, the south is the epitome of this saying and ANY time politics are brought up there is a comment about liberals...true red necks reside down here)
They use the term, "Yankee" loosely and are so ignorant of the word they don't realize it's derogatory (some know and still use it anyway). This word is used up North and out West as a nickname for the New York Yankees. That's it. Period.
Fakeness (I don't care where you're from...work down here at any job and you'll notice this within the first few hours)
Terrible education (drop out rates down here are off the charts...there are so many uneducated people it's scary)
Poverty, poverty, poverty (so many run-down housing developments, abandoned buildings, etc...awful)
That's it for now. Yeah, people are polite and nice, but so are people in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, etc. It's not JUST down South where stangers say, "hello". Wake up!
The North won the Civil War...they never have a legitimate rebuttal for that because it's the truth.

I've lived in the southeast most of my life, but have lived up north for a while too. I find this to be accurate. On the surface, people are much more polite. It's (mostly) all fake though. It's just a result of a centuries old social system based on feudalism. The more polite, well mannered you are = you were raised better = makes you seem like you have a high social standing.
After living here for most of my life, you come to realize that it's all fake. A lot of southerners are huge hypocrites. I live in the heart of the bible belt and lots of my relatives and acquantainces are VERY VERY conservative christians- yet they are alcoholics, and basically morally corrupt. Although I know many southerners who are not hypocrites and are genuinely good, well mannered, polite, awesome people.
P.S. - Education in the south sucks
