Where did you hear that? If this is true, I think it's a great idea. There's no doubt Webb can be successful in XC if he puts in the effort.

I frown on word police, but even worse are sanctimonious word police insulters it is the second "then" that should be "than" so does that make you one squared???

No, I think I was wrong. "Than" is used in comparisons and "then" is more of a time thing. (Then, entering the final lap, Bekele started to kick. His final lap was faster than the others). Just to make it running related.
Anyways, I think we should wait for Webb to run against real competition before we decide whether he is back or not.
Sorry you are wrong. 4x3 is closer to a square and 16:9 is closer to a rectangle. The ratio between width and height is 1:1.33 (i.e. closer to a square) versus 1:1.77.4x3 is your standard television and 16:9 is a wide-screen tv. Another way to think about it: if the diagonal size of your tv was 25 inches then in 4x3 the height would be 15 and the width 20. In 16:9 those it would be ~12.5 and ~22

Ummm 4x3 and 16x9 are the exact same as far as aspect ratio goes. 16 = 4^2, 9=3^2

wait.... seriously? maybe there are two people who need to learn the word "than".
Apparently. It's pretty sad when it's pointed out and the person doesn't understand. I've learned to correct a lot of my gramatical mistakes from posting on boards...such as always saying ran instead of run. Being ignorant to others corrections, is not a good virtue.

since a square is a rectangle, we're all correct in concluding you meant to write "16:9 is more rectangular"
Yes thanks for correcting me. My larger point still holds though. You can't apply a non-linear transformation to two numbers and expect to get the same ratio.
Is running a 4:04 really a rust buster? Shouldn't an athlete of Webb's caliber be pacing himself to 4 flats in practice? If he's going to toe a line, I would argue that 4:04 should be out of the scope of possibilities. and 1:52?? Is that really a workout for him now?
If so, he's in way worse shape than I feared. aspect ratio or not, I'll go ahead and use the word fat... he looks too fat to be a world class runner of anything over the 200.
Berlin - track
I think alot of people are over analyzing these 2 races. Someone posted on this thread that he looked like he was having fun, and just running. Isn't that what it's all about? Chasing dreams and having fun? If I was Webb, I'd just think back to my high school/childhood years and remember when I was just having fun and just running to get better. And for those that are speculating over his times -- What's his rush? I think that was the cause for his debacle last year... Rushing himself into shape. Time is on his side, as much as many people think it's not! He should just be worried about running again, and just focusing on the basics -- the rest will take care of itself. Train hard and pray, that's it =)
It doesn't matter how he does..we know the inevitable Webb chokejob will be coming at some point. He's the Alex Rodriguez of T&F
I agree. His form could use a lot of work, but that'll probably come from doing more intervals. I think he is okay where he is at right now though. He probably won't pop out a 3:51.1 in april, but that's okay, because that season he peaked a little early. Last season he was a little too far behind, so I think this year will be the GOLDie locks season, pun intended. i hope its his goldie locks season anyway. i predict he will be in 3:55 shape come april, 3:52 shape come june, and the in summer he might be able to get into 3:48-50 shape. i hope the best for him, and i hope he doesn't have anymore injuries.

I think you got it about right.
Really?
The same aspect ratio would be 4X4 (not squared) and 3X4, for a 16/12 ratio, which is reduced to 4/3. Do you mean you cannot tell the difference between movie aspect ratio and TV?

Good one.
do intervals make bad form worse? whatever the case, i hope he irons it out so it's smooth.
I don't think intervals have a huge impact on form-fitness, yes, but for form it is better to go for hills, drills, strengthening, etc-and less weight up top. Ever seen a guy with as big of an upper body as Webb run that fast? He succeeds in spite of his build, not because of it.
Look at El Guerrouj and Morceli and most of the Kenyans in this video of the '96 olympic 1500.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_i9q-Djy-M
Their upper bodies are pretty much just along for the ride until the last 400-500m when the pace increases. Webb muscles his way along the entire race, sort of like Cacho but even more, his arms crossing over the midline of his body.
When alan is on, he is on. I'm guessing that what determines whether he is "on" or not is his lower body mechanics. He has had hip/hamstring injuries in the past and I'm guessing when they crop up he has to muscle his way along instead of gliding with full range of mpotion in the hips. Look at Reebok in '07 where he dominated the field (including Lagat) over the last 100m. Perfect mechanics in the last straightaway. Compare that to some of his races in 2008 where his mechanics were pretty aweful.
