$30 is fine.
Most barbers have one cut, and it usually involves telling them what clipper to use.
This is completely incorrect , a GREAT barber can do ANY cut with ANY instrument. If you're going to a barber that should be retired or a military barber.....yes, expect the same cut. The way to find the best barber in one's area is to go to several shops and just sit and watch.
The barber who asks questions and really tries to understand what the customer wants and pulls it off with no issues, that's your barber.
I've been doing hair for many years now and the problem I seem to have with new customers is that they really don't know how to explain what it is they want. Barbers can make you look amazing, IF you are explaining to them.
I often hear from new customers ..... ME: "So, do you have any particular style in mind?)
Customer: "Well YOU'RE the professional!" Or the famous "I don't know".
Yes, the person cutting IS the professional....BARBER. Unfortunately we cannot read minds so need help from the person getting the haircut.
If you are unsure about what cut you'd like, bring pictures and ASK for the barber's opinion. But whatever you do, don't take a picture and shove it at the barber and say "kind of like that, ya know?"
We really DO want to make people happy but we just need some input.
And I'll be the first to admit that yes, there ARE some lazy people out there that don't ask anything and just grab the clippers and off with it all. That is lazy and unacceptable but just like ANYTHING else, we are not ALL like that. I take pride in what I do and although it is tough on my body (standing with arms up and down, bending, being a contortionist when people won't sit still, etc.) and the hours are long (NO breaks, lunch) since I work alone. I have been through 6 barbers and honestly it's easier to just work alone. I'll never again employ a person that has worked at a chain as they are paid hourly and MUST do so many cuts per hour or get sent home...can't collect a paycheck that way. And they truly don't care what the customer looks like, their philosophy is , and I quote... "It doesn't matter what his hair looked like, I'm getting paid anyway."
I apologize for babbling on, I just wanted people to know that not ALL barbers are uneducated ( I have a college degree) and not all barbers are lazy and don't care. And some days I'd just LOVE to throw in the proverbial towel and never deal angry people again...it is very often a thankless job where we are treated poorly.
Thanks for letting me vent...and I charge $16 for a men's cut....$3.00 off for Seniors and $3.00 for Military, Police, Firefighters...First Responders. They ARE appreciated.
