Run on the treadmill if it will help you complete the workout. The minor benefits you'd achieve from running outside are more than offset by the unnecessary stress on the body and increased chances of cutting off the run early. The main purpose of the long run is just to keep going for an extended period of time - not something that goes well with 0-10 degree temps.

Thanks for the insight. And yes, I know if i do the run on the treadmill i will be able to go the distance as if i were to go outside i might not be able to complete it.
yea. you gotta do what you gotta do man. And i'm preparing for a marathon in march so i have to do what i can to get in my long runs. And, plus i have the luxury to watch the football games while running on it.
Please....0-10 degrees F, isn't too bad to run. Why don't you do 2 miles on the treadmill, warm up the body and then head outside. I shovelled 2" of snow to warm up this morning, then did 15miles and the temps were about 0 or -4 with the wind (maybe abit colder cause I run way faster than the wind was going today).
Even though i'm enjoying the Giants getting whooped with 2 minutes left in the first half, i couldn't spend 2 hours on the treadmill watching TV....maybe I could do 2 hours if there was a constant supply of hot women on the stair climbers in front of me at the gym, but definitely couldn't deal with running on the treadmill at home for 2 hrs...no way. get outside.
I just finished up a 15 miler on the treadmill. We got a storm here in Boston last night and the roads are a mess. As I've aged, I kind of changed my thoughts on the treadmill. I feel that the today's run on the treadmill was much more beneficial that slipping and sliding through 15 on the roads. I was able to run in shorts and t-shirt as well as drop the pace to about 6:15's (something I could have never done on the roads).
touche....the roads were sloppy here too and my pace was more in the low 8min/miles vs 6 range, but I figure with the snow I had to work abit harder... I wonder if running 15 in the snow is the same as running 18 on a treadmill interms of effort.hmmmm
I've never had much of a problem running in plain cold temps, but ice is another matter. I'm not at an age where recovery from falls is as quick as it once was, and I get enough injuries just from the wear and tear of running thankyouverymuch!

today i ran 16 at 6:15 pace. and down here in south texas it was in the 70's and i ran without my shirt. sucks to be up north
Some interesting commentary on treadmill training...
last week I was with Mickey and it was 55 every morning, this week i'm back to reality and it's nasty....and no I didn't do the marathon there, I left before the expo started..got my ass out of there...nothing against a disney marathon, just 8 days of disney was enough for me...and my wife likes to go down the same day as my daughters bday.
Set the inclination to 2% though. Since the band moves you don't have to push against it as hard as you would have to against solid ground. The inclination will make up for that.

This is completely wrong. The treadmill is easier for a few reasons, but the moving belt isn't one of them. The best thing to do is keep it flat except when you actually want to run an incline, as a whole run at 2% is not great on the achilles. Just take into account that it's a little easier and adjust pace accordingly.

Your butt and Hamstring don't have to push as hard against a moving band as they would have to against stationary pavement. Essentially, the work that the treadmill motor does has to be deducted from your work. If there were no motor in the treadmill I'd agree with you.
If a 2% incline bothers your achilles tendon, then you're in dire need of stretching. Man, that is all of 100 ft elevation gain per mile!
Note that 100'/mile over 15 miles is 1500'. I once did a 14-mile run with about 1000' elevation gain and it was brutal. Not something I would want to subject my self to on a regular basis.
That was on roads, though, wasn't it? So you had that gain on top of everything else. The whole point is to simulate road running on the treadmill - and you HAVE to make up for the motor in some way. If you want to run faster, fine, but that's going to mess with other parts of your neuromuscular makeup.
As an aside, I don't consider 1000' for 14 miles brutal, but then that really depends on what you're used to and what event you're training for.
