quite true, rundaddy. that's why i'd like to get that 41:30 10K before i turn 50. 45:00 (the F50-54 mark) is a huge jump (and more like marathon pace). i like your idea of adding 10 sec per year, although that wouldn't even make up half the differential between my age group's standard and the next one up.

My initial post indicated what I believe was respectable.
The others showed what I believe is attainable by the Talented.

The M55 American record is 16:07. I follow the age group results pretty closely and I'd be very interested if there is someone who is a short term risk to break it.
So why don't you go ahead and tell us the name of this fellow "in his mid fifties" who ran sub-16 in 2008. I'm sure he wouldn't mind the recognition.
I don't think I ever said he was American, nor did I say he was 55+?
I'm not sure of his age... might even be 53 or 54. I thought maybe it was closer to 55 than 50 (which the OP was talking about), but probably not 55. Nor can I verify time/date/course. So given the above, the name probably wouldn't be a great deal of interest to you.
As far as recognition goes, I'm sure he's happy enough with the recognition he gets for his 2:32 marathon.
Art Meaney from Newfoundland,Canada (born in '44):
Age 50:
10miles: 55:38
10km: 34:33
Age 51:
10km: 34:21
5km:16:38
Age 60:
5km: 18:16
10km:38:04
Age 61:
10miles: 58:12
And I'm not sure those are his best times at those ages, I think he was running sub 34 for 10km at 50 or 51.
I agree with the comment that most posts are listing times well beyond respectable. I was a 4:30 miler and 9:50 two miler and was considered respectable at age 17. Now, after 35 years away from running, at 52 I am working very hard and working through much injury to get in the low 20's for a 5k.

I hit the times when I was 16,17,18.
My goal is to get under those marks. That is the standard I set for myself. I easily have the drive but my body rebels against me too much.
I was running low 16s, low 33s etc as a 20 something. These were achieved off 120-180km per week of very serious training. The volume of training dropped away from 30 onwards. Now at 49 I am normally running 19 and 39mins. I generally only run 40-50kms per week with occassional weeks of 60-70kms. I was running just under 18 and low 36s in my mid 40s but an injury caused me to miss about 6 months and I haven't been able to get back to that level.
Now that I'm nearing 50 I'm keen to do a bit more work and get back around 18 and 37. That would put me in among the top few over 50s in the bulk of races locally.
Certainly plenty of super talented runners can run way quicker than that. However I think at 50 if you are in the 19min and 40min range at 5 and 10k you will be among the first of your age in all but the top events.
First of all how DARE you spread personal information about somebody who has no clue nor cares to know who you are "johnnyb1610"?!
Second of all, whatever type of runner you think you may be, my dad could beat you running backwards...Regardless of what his occupation is, the reason he is good is because he trains just as hard or harder than anyone out there, 7 days a week!!!
I'll have you know he was an excellent runner(better than you'll ever dream of) when I was growing up all while he was working 2 jobs and still being an excellent Dad and NEVER EVER misssing one of my own sporting events!
So before you open you big, fat uneducated mouth about something you have no clue about: GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT you loser!
Sincerely,
Sam Cortes Jr.
I'm reading this thread and thought it was new. Then I read a post and thought, those are just like my times. Then I saw my old name and thought, that's my old name, who's using that. Then I realized this is an old thread and thought, this is an old thread.
My high school coach runs 3 days a week and has no problem running 65 minute 10 milers with us on Sundays. He will be 50 this summer.
I'm pretty sure that Doug Bell ran a sub-33:00 (or was it a sub-34:00?) at the Bolder Boulder 10k in his early 50s (like 53). Nonetheless, the conversion to sea level is about a minute, so that's super impressive. The point being that it appears possible that one can approach one's high school times as a 50-year old. That would be my goal.

Drugs have been filtering into Master's ranks for years from the "bottom" end of 40-somethings (e.g. Regina/Eddy), now we are seeing/about to see an influx from the older side:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/17/magazine/17antiaging-t.html?ref=magazine
The 50-and-older records will indeed take a beating in years to come, and with no stringent testing, we will have no idea of how much of it is pharmaceutically "tweaked".
I respect any master who doesnt spout off about age-graded performances
We want to know whats respectable for a 50 yo, not who is the best nationally.
If you can break 21:00/44:00 (ag 18:22/38:28) you're looking pretty special and that will put you in the top 16% of runners.
A 50 yo male who can run 18:20 (ag=16:02)is in the top 2% of all runners and will win the 50-54 ag often. Among his ag peers he's in the top 0.5%.
For 50 yo who can run 16:40 (ag=14:35)he'll win overall in many road races and is probably in the top 50 among men in the 50-54 nationally.

=========================
Really, so you when a 60 yo runs 39:00 for 10K in a big race and is lost in the pack back in 100th place, you see no value in age-grading that performance to get an idea of his talent?
Here it comes, that 39:00 age-grades to a 31:22. Now we can see just how exceptional that performance is among runners with age factored in.
Look, all people experience a decline in athletic performance as we age, what's wrong with measuring it?
Agreed!
