Anybody know the story behind him leaving after making the Olympic team?

I know for a fact that he was basically being coached by his Kansas St. coach for a while despite being in Eugene. I think he wanted to go back to school and his favored coach is there so makes sense. And for Christian, I mean, he made the freakin' olympics so maybe it's time to just go to school, he's probably hit the pinnacle already anyway. just my take. i'm happy for him going where he wants to be.
I understand for the sake of finishing school - that's a good idea. Though for running, I know I won't be the first to say "bad idea." Christian is a whale amongst tadpoles in Manhattan, whereas in Eugene, he could get beat (aka "pushed") in any workout or run. You can only go so far on your own... Having good training partners take you further, something he'll definitly lack in Manhattan.
I fear another Charlie Gruber situation... He was all over the scene in the mile for a couple of years, went back to Kansas, and fall off the face of the earth...

You don't have to be getting beaten in practice to make you improve. In fact, to many people it is detrimental because they are killing themselves every day and are wasted when it is time to run fast. He did his best running in college at Kansas State where I believe he ran 1:44 (maybe that was right after KSU but was still training there).
This is only for a semester people.

Just to reiterate:
1) Gruber only trained under Doug Clark at KU during his post-collegiate years (including the Olympic year).
2) Smith ran 1:44 training under Smith in Manhattan, and was still largely under Smith's guidance last year.
Location just not that big a deal, IMO.
Undergrad? Did he never finish a degree before leaving for Eugene? If so, what the hell was he doing?
