So 2 days ago, it hurt a bit to rub down my tibia (especially the left one), more than it usually does as both of my tibias always seem to be a bit inflamed or something and have been that way about an year now (and I trained through it, 50-90 mpw). Actually, there was a localized pain (6-7/10 on the pain scale) on my left tibia as well, right where there's a bump, about the final 1/3 of the left tibia (that bump has been there about an year now). It was definitely discomforting to tap on it. There's a bump on my right tibia as well, right around the final 1/3 of the tibia, and it also was inflamed more than usual. I was easily able to hop on both of legs without any pain.
Either way, I decided to not run for the last 2 days, and did a lot of icing on both shins.
Today, both of my tibias don't at all feel inflamed. There is not any pain to tap the bumps on both tibias. I can easily hop to fatigue on both legs.
I'll go out and do a 30 min run on grass today, and see if it at all gets painful as the run progresses. I don't think it's going to happen, but I want to just make sure that I can run my 10K turkey trot in 2 days.
So, was this just a nasty case of shin splints? Even though there are bumps (a good 2 mm thick) on both my shins, which have been there for about an year or so now, do I need to be concerned about getting a stress fracture? Will icing after every run and shin exercises be enough to keep training? Thanks.
