this is going to be my first half marathon. anyone with any clothing advice for a half in this temperature (26 degrees)? would tights and a base-layer long sleeve be too much? what about thermal hat and gloves?
im hoping to run mid-70s and i dont want the weather or my clothing to affect me.
For me in that temperature, hat and gloves are a must. Long sleeve shirt (probably one of my thicker ones, but only one layer). For a training run I would definitely wear tights but I'd be tempted to go with shorts for a race depending on sun, wind, precipitation, etc. Probably not a huge difference anyway. Tights would be fine, too.
What elite guys are registered in the 8k?
Going with short tights and a ls shirt. Disposable hat and gloves.
In the marathon, shorts, singlet and arm warmers! ear band and gloves! some throw aways for the starting line! Temp is not going to break 30, so gonna be cold, wind between 5-10 mph! what are your thoughts? Enough to wear? Im looking to run sub 2:30. How much does sub freezing weather effect marathon times? The coldest i have run a marathon may have been in the 40's.
You're not going to find out about elites in ANY of the races until Sunday when the results are posted.
Looks like it's gonna be cold (25F) at the start - you can curse the organizers for moving it from 8 to 7 to accommodate the Penguins. Wind doesn't look too bad, 6-8 MPH from the West. You'll have a tailwind the first couple miles, then you'll be shielded by the highway running south along the Delaware, but then it's gonna suck heading west from Center City to West Philly, right into it after your nice and sweaty - similar to last year as I recall. And climbing the hill on 34th at Penn/Drexel and then up to Belmont Plateau it will be from the side or front, too, and you'll have a crosswind out and back along the river. So, if you're wearing gloves, hat, etc. don't toss 'em when you warm up, carry or tuck them in your shorts b/c chances are you're going to need them later in the race.
I really think the organizers should dump the half and just allow those 2-3,000 people into the full marathon - it's obvious the demand is there since the race closed out back in Oct., and the half really doesn't add much but screws up the course for the full.
Good luck to everyone running first time I've missed it for a couple of years but given the weather I don't feel too upset.
How far into the race is the hill on 34th? I'm not familiar with the course. Thanks.
A little before the ten mile marker. Also noticed S. Duffy in the 1/2 listing. Anyone now if he is doing it to really race also some 1:07-1:08 guys in the listing from the area.
where's this listing?
Anyone on the street with results?
Thanks!
anybody remember back "in the day" when it was first the Provident? starting in Ambler Cty.? up Germantown Ave., etc. Just wondering.
Yeah...big ass hill coming into Chestnut Hill and then the long decent down to the river....ouch! Finished up downtown on Chestnut.
I got word from a friend that he ran 2:24:42 although I have no idea what place that got him. Perfect day for the Maine group.
So much for "live video coverage of the marathon" on their web site...
What is up with the results? I tried looking up most of my friends and few of them have correct times. I looked up age groups and people ran 3:25 pace per mile? any one?
Yeah, I saw the same thing. Not sure. I did think the 8k results were very fast for the people I was looking at.
Maybe, the time is for the last mat passed and they didn't finish? Plus some wheelchair times?
When you pay $100 for a half, I would hope everything goes as planned.
How did you even look up for your friends times. The website for philly marathon sucks! I guess the Philly's budget problems spilled over to their marathon website.
