Audie Murphy. A true WW2 hero that played himself in a picture called, "To hell and back" which was story on his life. Arguably the most decorated veteran of the US's greatest military accomplishment.

I'm a huge Clint fan but he doesn't even come close to Audie.

But seriously, we have to decide if we're talking about real life or in the films alone or both, and if both, which is more important. From what I've gathered, Bronson and Eastwood seem to have the best combination of tough movies and a bad*** life. Also, I'm sure we can find minor actors (Like Ermey) who have led very tough lives on and off the screen, but I wouldn't put Ermey ahead of Eastwood, who has been defining toughness for over forty years of being one of the biggest actors in the business.

It depends. If you're asking who is the most powerful character in movies/TV, you have to consider Mr. Rourke. He once battled and defeated Satan on Fantasy Island.

Come to think of it, Ricardo Montalban was also Kahn in Star Trek, a superhuman creation of human cloning experiments. Pretty powerful there too.

Though he obviously does not have the appeal of a war veteran or a classic movie actor, I think Daniel Craig deserves an honorable mention. He does most (if not all) of his own stunts, and ended up with several injuries in filming "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace," two very physically intense films.

Why is being in the military the only measure of toughness for an actor? That's pretty stupid.

I'll go with Bob Mitchum. He hoboed, worked on a chain gang during a jail stint on a vagracny charge down south, and got busted for pot way before it became fashionable.

After he served a two month sentence in jail, he was asked what it was like and he replied "like Palm Springs without the riff raff."

Robert Mitchum waited nearly 4 years after Pearl Harbor to get drafted in the U.S. Army in 1945, at the age of 28 years old. At least he served a few months though.

Harold Lloyd, hands down. Blew off a thumb and finger during one of his "bomb" gags.
